Mike Sexton is only 2009 Poker Hall of Fame Inductee

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 20th, 2009

mike-sexton2009 was a very interesting year as far as the Poker Hall of Fame selection process went.  This year, fans were allowed to nominate their favorite players via the Internet which definitely added a twist to the process.  And this twist was most likely the main reason why online sensation Tom “durrrr” Dwan found himself as one of the 10 players nominated for the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class.

The 23 year-old Dwan joined plenty of other famous poker players and personalities such as Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Men Nguyen, Mike Sexton, Erik Seidel, Tom McEvoy, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, and Dan Harrington.  Ivey (age 37), Dwan, and Negreanu (age 35) were particularly interesting nominations because they all had a chance to become the youngest person ever selected to the Poker Hall of Fame.

But in the end, nobody broke Chip Reese’s record as being the youngest person ever inducted (age 40).  In fact, nobody but Mike Sexton even made it into the Hall this year which is very interesting because most of Sexton’s accomplishments rest as a promoter instead of a player (though his playing accolades are pretty impressive too).  Sexton was the only one who was able to get 75% of the media and living Hall member vote.

Sexton’s playing accomplishments include a total of 46 WSOP cashes to go along with $3.7 million in career winnings.  The promotional work that Sexton has done has earned him the nickname of the “ambassador of poker”.

Sexton has been a major catalyst in helping the World Poker Tour achieve worldwide fame, and has also been an outstanding poker personality in the process.  He is also a noted poker author as he’s written for numerous poker publications such as Card Player Magazine and Gambling Times.

High Stakes Poker Host A.J. Benza Gets Fired

Posted By : Comb Over-Under October 14th, 2009

Of all the poker shows that have been created in the past couple of years, High Stakes Poker has definitely got to be considered one of the most successful.  High Stakes has used the cash game format during its successful run along with the broadcasting skills of A.J. Benza and Gabe Kaplan to survive for five eventful seasons.  The show has been so successful that the Game Show Network has decided to bring it back for a 6th season.

However, one key ingredient which won’t be returning for season 6 is A.J. Benza who was informed by Game Show Network representatives that his services will no be needed.  Going even further, GSN has decided to get rid of Benza so that they can add a younger female host to go along with Kaplan.  There has been no official word as to who this younger female host will be as of yet.

Regardless of whom the woman host turns out to be, Benza is definitely not happy about the decision and has let his opinion be known.  Benza made a good point on his blog (where he was talking about a conversation he had with GSN suits) when he said, “if you got the best pizza in town for 5 seasons, why try and add licorice to it?”  Benza’s argument is definitely a good point since him and Kaplan were an excellent announcing duo throughout the first 5 seasons of High Stakes Poker.

Now everything is up in the air for High Stakes Poker with a potentially much younger, model-like host being brought to the table.  Sure GSN is banking on the move attracting a wider audience, but they could lose some of the existing audience too.  If things don’t work out, then there is definitely the possibility of Benza coming back.  A.J. put this into perspective when he said, “And look on the bright side: if she stinks….I might be back for HSP 7”

Naked Poker Players in ESPN Magazine?

Posted By : Comb Over-Under October 9th, 2009

Naked Poker ProsIn the newest issue of ESPN Magazine, athletes are baring it all in the “Body Issue”.

While we here at the CarbonBlog have nothing against nudity, we are wondering about the choices of … models (?) for the shoot.

Leading the pack is Jennifer Harman, and then you get three others you probably weren’t expecting to see all in (and all out — hi-0hhhhh) on the poker tables.

As you’ve no doubt seen in the picture, that’s Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu and Scotty Nguyen. It’s always good to see poker coverage in ESPn, even if the players aren’t covered.

I guess that photo is NSFW, if you work with people who don’t want to see Phil Hellmuth’s moobs. I probably should have said that first.

Luke Schwartz butts Heads with Tom Dwan and Others

Posted By : Comb Over-Under October 9th, 2009

schwartzThere have been several noted bad boys in poker over the years.  People like Phil Hellmuth, Tony G, and Mike Matusow have made just as big of a name for themselves on the felt as they have with their mouths and crazy antics.  But these are of course well noted live tournament players who’ve gained most of their fame from being on TV and winning huge tourneys.  However, one player is proving that being a poker bad boy is no longer limited to live play.

His name is Luke Schwartz and he is a 25 year-old player from London, England.  Schwartz is definitely a solid online poker player, since he earned over $1 million last year.  But big winnings aside, Schwartz is probably better known for his tirades against fellow players.  And these aren’t just any players that Luke Schwartz is targeting either since he’s going after online stars such as Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Di “urindanger” Dang, and David Benyamine.

Dwan has received the brunt of Schwartz’s rants as Luke has labeled him ‘gay’ and ‘geeky’.  Schwartz dove deeper into his disdain for Dwan by saying in an interview, “I just can’t stand him.  I hate watching him on that new High Stakes Poker and seeing him dominate so badly.  He’s such a cringe-worthy guy.  It’s all too geeky.  I just can’t handle it.”

Luke Schwartz has also declared that David Benyamine is ‘atrocious’, Patrik Antonius is a ‘golden trollocks’, and Di Dang is supposedly a ‘nitty bum hunter’.  Schwartz antics haven’t been confined to the Internet either since he was recently banned from this year’s European Poker Tour season after throwing a fit over a sandwich.  At just 25 years old, we can certainly expect to hear more antics from Schwartz in the future.

Guy Laliberte is a Space Tourist, Will Return to Lose at Poker in 11 Days

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 30th, 2009

Guy-LaliberteCEO of Cirque du Soleil, French-Canadian billionare and noted high-stakes poker loser Guy Laliberte has blasted off into space. The space tourist launched on September 30, with an 11-day ‘mission’ aboard the International Space Station.

Canada’s first space tourist comes with a $35million price tag (which is only $15million more than Laliberte’s estimated online poker losses since the start of 2007).

I can only hope that he’s able to get some sort of Wifi up there to keep up his online appearances — or at least play a cash game against some of the other astronauts.

That’s a lot of money, but hey, if you’ve got it, spend it. I can’t think of anything more awesome than going into space. Laliberte is one of those crazy bazillionares who does pretty much whatever he wants. This is a dude who grew up as a fire-eater, reinvented the circus and has now seen our planet from space.

Think about it. This is a guy who has taken down a $1.2 million pot on High Stakes Poker, lost millions online and made billions away from the felt. Going into space is monumental, but it’s arguably not even the biggest thing he’s been a part of.

Take that, Lance Bass.

Female Poker Pros Disappoint in Amazing Race

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 30th, 2009

Tiffany and MariaThe poker world was happy to hear about female pros Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho appearing on the CBS reality TV show “The Amazing Race.”  Unfortunately, the poker world may not be so proud of the pair after their debut on the 15th installment of the Amazing Race.

After leading off the race by saying they were non-profit workers from LA – benefiting the homeless, the girls were off to a pretty good start.

Unfortunately, all of the profits from this charity go towards funding both of the girls’ poker careers.  Eventually, a female fan of the pair saw them at the airport and went on about how great they are at poker.  The bluff got sniffed out and the girls were left looking like asses.

The girls jumped out to an initial lead, but nearly got knocked out when they finished last in the Japanese-game-show-wasabi-bomb eating section of the race. After some duck herding, they were back in resasonable shape.

Overall, I don’t think they come off as likeable. By lying about what they do for a living, and then pretty much getting busted immediately, they make poker players look especially sleazy.  Factor in how annoying they are, and they’re on the fast track to being ‘that annoying team’ that viewers want to see lose.

Tune in each Sunday at 8pm (after a long day of watching football, it’s a good way to get some quality time in with the wife without leaving the couch) to see how the girls do throughout the rest of the action.

Strip Poker on the Wii? Thanks, Japan!

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 25th, 2009

wii sexy pokerHey Gamers! If you’ve got 500 Wii Points laying around, you can pick up a little bit of (slightly creepy) poker action.

Wii’s “Sexy Poker” is a downloadable game that lets you play Texas Hold’em and Blackjack against a dealer in an attempt to de-clothe anime babes.

Yep. Use those motion censors remotes to hit, stand, bet … and then reap the benefits of a bikini-wearing animated character. The game features no nudity, which is a good thing for me, bad thing for weirdoes.

I’ve never been much for poker video games, or animated nudity, so I’ll take a pass on Sexy Poker.

The game is rated 17+ and is banned in Australia. They may piss on video poker machines, but those Aussies are gamer-prudes!

If anyone has played this, hit up the comments and let me know. My Wii is strictly for bowling, so I’m not going to find out about this game first hand.

Made-For-TV Caesars Cup Makes for Great TV

Posted By : BungalowOfCards September 24th, 2009

Caesars CupOn Friday morning pros attending the World Series of Poker Europe will wake up and rip the wrapping off a brand-new event in the poker world, the Caesars Cup.

The Caesars Cup is essentially a carbon copy of the PGA’s Ryder Cup, which has successfully attracted a substantial fanbase to golf’s fifty billionth event of the year. Young, popular pros have been conscripted to 8-player teams captained by Annette Obrestad (Europeans) and Daniel Negreanu (Americas).

The awkwardly-named teams will play through a variety of different permutations of doubles No-Limit Hold’em, with a bit of heads up thrown into the mix to guarantee lively action.  The format is—not unlike the Ryder Cup—somewhat hard to grasp at first, but the appeal is simple: it’s us vs them (you decide which team “us” is for you).

Here’s why I love the idea: poker, like golf, tennis, and other individual sports, is limited to the extent to which it can tell a compelling story by the success of the major names that are playing in that particular event.  In other words, a classic case of the No Tiger Woods, No Interest Syndrome.  Just ask any of the qualifiers for the final table at the Borgata Poker Open (you’ll need to look them up), also going on this week.

By assembling teams made up of well-known pros around inclusive international labels, the event cashes in on fans who have been trained on years of cheering for their favorite sports team, and who will love to see the players work together to win bragging rights, and play entertaining poker.  And if the first Ryder Cup was any indication, they’ll be playing hard.

In case you’re interested, the players involved include heavy hitters Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Jennifer Harmer, Doyle Brunson (Americas), Peter Eastgate, Patrick Antonius, and Dario Minieri (Europeans).

ESPN will be broadcasting all the action as part of their World Series of Poker Europe coverage.  Be sure to tune in to watch history unfold, and because you know you want to.

Hellmuth to Coach Jeff Shulman Before the November Nine

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 23rd, 2009

ShulmanAlthough Phil Hellmuth isn’t a member of the final table of the WSOP Main Event in November, he’s going to have a protégé hitting the felts.

Jeff Shulman, currently 4th with 19,580,000 chips, has enlisted the poker brat as a coach for the upcoming final table action. No matter what you think of Hellmuth’s antics, he’s obviously an accomplished player. With 75 in-the-money finishes through the years at WSOP events, Hellmuth also has 11 bracelets. That’s good for #1 in the industry.

Shulman thinks they have similar playing styles, and thinks he could use some pointers in short-handed play without drastically changing anything.

Don’t expect him to be a loud mouth, though. Shulman is usually a quiet player with little to say on the tables. Shulman finished in 7th place in 2000 and looks to do better than that this year. This is the 4th time he’s played at WSOP final table.

Do you think this will payoff for Shulman? If you’ve made it to the final table, you’ve got to be doing something correctly.

This Just In: Poker is Super Duper

Posted By : BungalowOfCards September 23rd, 2009

Let’s just take a second to celebrate what makes poker great.  A reminder of why we love this game.

In the midst of all the news we hear and read about flashy international tournaments, sometimes-hot sometimes-not television coverage, and the drama of celebrity players deciding which hat to wear to a particular event, it can easy to forget the appeal of poker itself.

So let’s celebrate what we love about the core of it all: simple card games made infinitely complex by the nuances of the human beings playing them.  From the rush of that rocket-ship-taking-off-inside-you feeling of catching a huge river, to the doubt of never knowing what your opponent has, to the dry heave sensation that comes with getting caught on a bluff, the physical and emotional thrill of poker is what keeps us coming back.  Right?

Check out the video below for an example of poker at its best.  Two players at the top of their game playing beyond the cards–ignoring what the strategy books would say, leaving statistics behind, and bluffing like a former president–indeed, playing off each other.  This is what it’s all about, right?  Go get ‘em Phil Ivey.  Thanks for the reminder.
