Playing Limit Hold’em Tournaments

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 26th, 2010

While most people prefer to play the more popular No-Limit Hold’em tournaments, Limit tourneys still draw a fair share of players.  In fact, some people actually like playing Limit Hold’em tournaments since they force them to play more under control.  If you’re a Limit Hold’em buff, or have just considered playing in a Limit tourney, these tips should help your game.

The Basics

Basic Limit Hold’em tournament strategy involves playing in position during the early going and sticking to premium, or near-premium, hands.  Since it’s tougher to come from behind in a Limit tourney, you need to keep a decent chip stack at all times.  This means avoiding playing hands like A-Q, K-J, and Q-T out of position since they can cost you a lot of chips.

Steal Blinds and Small Pots

Once the blinds start going up towards the middle stages of the tournament, you’re going to have to steal blinds and small pots to stay in the action.  This means betting out more and trying to semi-bluff other players into folding so you can steal whatever is on the table.  Of course, you need to take into account the players you’re stealing blinds from before you make the attempt.  If they’re a tight player who only plays premium hands, then you’re no doubt better off leaving them alone.

Much like No-Limit

Sure Limit Hold’em tournaments are different from their No-Limit counterpart, but this doesn’t mean you should treat a Limit Hold’em tourney like it’s totally different.  In fact, you can apply a lot of the same concepts from No-Limit towards Limit Hold’em.  This means you still need to know what hands to play and which ones to fold, look for opportunities to bluff, and make strong value bets.  The only difference is going to be that you can’t take a whole player’s stack in one hand.

Day 2 of the Aussie Millions Main Event – More Elliot Smith

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 26th, 2010

aussie-millions-logoCarbonPoker correspondant, Shane, is back with another update from Down Under.

Day 2 of the Aussie Millions saw again only one Carbon Poker runner. This was a relief some 13 hours later as our one entrant for the day kept me busier than one player really should!

Elliot “ilikebiggirls” Smith showed quite early he was going to play a lot of pots, and getting called down or losing pots was not going to change his strategy. He came into the day very well fed and focused and it showed as he negotiated early proceedings including one of the most bizarre live hands I have ever seen.

Elliot and his opponent went to the river both feeling pretty good about their hands, but the board was somewhat trouble some. After a QQ5 flop the turn brought another queen and the river another 5. Both players now had a full house and most on the rail assumed it was the same full house, queens over fives, how wrong they all were. Elliot’s opponent flipped up pocket tens making queens over tens, Elliot’s look of confusion had me thinking he was beat and was playing the boards queens over five full house. I too was wrong as Elliot flipped pocket tens, both players indeed had the same full house, queens over 10’s. I’ve never seen symmetry at the poker table like that before, and I doubt I ever will again!

As the day wore on an older gentleman an the table quickly became Elliot’s nemesis, he seemed to have Elliot covered at every turn. Elliot’s pocket jacks were called down by granddads Q4, which of course flopped a queen to make the higher pair. No matter how these hands played out though Elliot stayed true to his plan, kept his foot down and for every pot that was shipped away from him, there was one coming back.

Late in the afternoon Elliot’s table was broken and he was moved to a new table, there was a change in scenery but no change in his style of play. Down went the sunglasses, in went the chips. As afternoon became night it was more of the same and Elliot’s chip stack started to stand out as being one of the bigger stacks in the room. Often if he let one hand go and a decent amount of chips with it, he would fire aggressively at the very next pot quickly recouping any losses.

As time passed there were only three decent sized stacks left at the table, Elliot took this as his cue to do his best Sammy Faha impression, ‘raisey daisy’! Elliot was raising almost every pot, stealing blinds left right and centre.  He finally ran into a reraise in hand that was to become a serious battle on Elliot’s table. Facing each other from opposite ends of the table was Elliot and one of the young guns of poker Dani Stern. Stern started the day with the the larger stack, but Elliot started to put a dint in that stack and as the hours dragged on both players grew more and more determined to take the other down. With Dani reraising Elliot there was finally some resistance at the table. First Elliot called for a count of Dani’s stack, then Dani called time on Elliot. Elliot stayed in the tank for a few minutes still, by now even I was sweating in the rail… however it all came to an anti-climax as Elliot laid his hand down.

To get back into the groove Elliot reraised the very next hand which once again went uncalled. Elliot rode plenty of hands like this through the evening and by the time the final level of the evening rolled around Elliot  built such a formidable stack that he was in fact the chip leader.

The next massive hand was again with Dani Stern. Preflop Elliot raised to 2500, Dani raised to 5k and Elliot quickly bumped it again throwing another 10k in the middle. Dani wasn’t going away though and he pushed all-in put his tournament life on the line as he was well covered by Elliot. Elliot went into the tank but eventually laid down his hand. Dani gleefully showed his hand J-7 of diamonds, quite happy with himself and the move he had just made.

Elliot really had dominated his table and his more well known opponent all night, this was made especially clear by the opposite end of the table scheming together to try to find a way to take him down. They of course weren’t successful and at the close of day 1 flight 2 Elliot ‘ilikebiggirls’ had 98,100 in chips and was entrenched at the top of the leaderboard.

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 25th, 2010

Elliot SmithCanadian, Aussie Mills veteran and all around good guy Elliot Smith (the poker player, not the dead musician) is grinding out another great showing in the 2010 Aussie Millions.

In 2009, Smith placed 3rd in the main event, and is gunning for another strong finish. Pictured at the tables at The Crown, Smith is focussing on repeating the feat. We’re trying to get in touch with him for some comments on how the action is going, and what kind of pressure he’s feeling.

More updates coming. Go get’em Elliot.

Side note: if you want to come play with an Aussie Mills contender, his screen name is ilikebiggirls. He also likes big payouts. We’ll see how he fares this year.

Brunson Catches Heat for Barack Obama Tweet

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 25th, 2010

doylebrunsonTwitter has become extremely popular among professional poker players since many of them use Tweets to keep fans updated on their latest news (you’re welcome, grandma).  Doyle Brunson is especially fond of Twitter as he uses the service to let people know about his tournament finishes, outrageous sports bets, and jokes that he finds funny.  And it is the jokes that have recently landed Brunson in hot water with many followers.

Brunson, who uses the account name @TexDolly, sent out a joke about Barack Obama on January 20th.  His joke/comment read as follows: “The Democrats say ‘give Obama time.’  Us Repubicans agree, 25 to life seems appropriate!”

Besides offending English buffs with his misspelling of Republicans, Brunson also drew the ire of Obama and Democrat supporters for the comment.  Numerous people sent Tweets back to Brunson chastising him for the shot he took at Obama; some people even accused him of being a racist.

Of course, the comments that labeled Brunson as a racist quickly prompted a response back from Doyle as he said, “Just because I don’t like the way things are going with Obama’s 1st year has nothing to do with the color of his skin.  Stop the racist BS!”

Poker pro Jeff Madsen chimed in on Brunson’s Obama Tweet by disagreeing in a more respectful manner.  Madsen wrote, “I respect u doyle but it seems that ur politics aren’t very informed are they. Don’t listen to television.”  Brunson responded back to Madsen by saying, “Yep, when I was 23 years old, I thought everybody should get a handout too. Now, I know better, let em get out and work.”

The controversial Tweet hasn’t stopped Brunson from sending out his barrage of blonde/politics jokes though as he recently typed the following, “Q..Name the most influential 1st Lady in American history…(hint…she was married to John Kennedy)…Blonde answer..Mrs Kennedy.”

T.J. Cloutier’s WSOP Bracelet is for Sale on eBay

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 21st, 2010

0106_NBC POKER AFTER DARK 2Winning a World Series of Poker bracelet is one of the biggest achievements that a poker player can earn during their career.  And pro poker player T.J. Cloutier has been lucky enough to win 6 of them during his career.  However, he is only holding five of them after an unidentified person bought one of the bracelets off of Cloutier recently.

The seller has a gold bracelet from the 2005 WSOP listed on eBay, and is claiming that it’s the same one T.J. Cloutier won in a $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament.  A description for the item also mentions that it has 13 round-cut diamonds and is made out of 14K gold.  The auction ends on January 24th and the bidding starts at $2,999; so far, nobody has made a bid yet.

The fact that Cloutier was willing to part ways with the bracelet raises more speculation about his previous money problems.  T.J. is known to gamble in casinos quite frequently, and is especially fond of the craps tables.  Cloutier is also backed in many the tournaments that he plays in despite being ranked 10th on the all-time poker winnings list with $9,787,199.  Cloutier is also ranked 16th on the all-time WSOP winnings list with $4,322,186.

In addition to the WSOP bracelet he won in the 2005 $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament, Cloutier has also captured bracelets in the 1987 Limit Omaha, 1994 $1,500 Limit Omaha Hi-Lo, 1994 $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em, 1998 $2,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, and 2004 $1,500 Seven Card Razz events.

Cloutier has also finished in the top 5 in four different WSOP Main Events; he placed 2nd in both the 1985 and the 2000 Main Events.  Recently though, Cloutier has had a string of bad luck at the WSOP since he has only cashed once in the last two years.

Multi-Table Sit and Go Strategy

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 13th, 2010

Carbon Poker MultiTableYour typical sit and go tournament involves 9 or 10 players with all of the action taking place on one table.  That being said, a lot of players like to branch out and play multi-table sit and go tournaments these days.  But one thing to keep in mind with multi-table SNG’s is that they require a different strategy from both single table sit and go’s as well as regular multi-table tourneys.

Surviving the Early Going

Just like any multi-table tournament, a multi-table SNG will have plenty of maniac players in the beginning.  This means you’ll have a lot of people trying to double up their chip stack through risky all-in moves in the beginning.

Some will double their stack while others will bust out; the key is that you don’t want to be in their way in either circumstance.  The best strategy for surviving the early part of a MTT SNG is tightening up your starting hand requirements.  However, if you can find an overly aggressive player who overplays their hand while you’ve got the nuts, don’t be afraid to call.

Concentrate on Yourself

Until you’ve made it to the final table, don’t worry about what is going on at the other tables.  Just concentrate on what you need to do to increase your chip stack and move on to the next table.  Of course, it’s perfectly fine to look at general things like how many players are left and the average stack size.  Just make sure that you’re not getting carried away with looking.

Final Table Strategy

If you do manage to make it to the final table, there’s a good chance you will be starting behind some other players in terms of chips.  Assuming you are a smaller stack, you’ll want to look for a great opportunity to double up (on a weaker player), and put yourself back in the hunt.  If you’re a bigger stack, you can sit back and take advantage of the smaller, more desperate stacks.  As a middle stack, you still have the luxury of not sitting on the verge of being blinded out.  But you need to be looking for ways to increase your chip stack at some point.

2010 WSOP Schedule is Released

Posted By : CarbonPoker December 21st, 2009

wsop chipsWe are still over 5 months away from the start of the 2010 World Series of Poker.  But even with the WSOP being so far away, Harrah’s Entertainment hasn’t wasted any time in releasing the tournament schedule for the world’s largest poker event.

The most glaring change to the WSOP schedule is that the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tourney has been removed.  This is a very interesting move since many of the world’s top pros enjoyed playing the $50K H.O.R.S.E. event.  However, the amount of entrants decreased from 148 players in 2008 to just 95 entrants in 2009, which showed waning popularity for the prestigious tournament.

Taking the $50k H.O.R.S.E. tournament’s place will be another $50k event in the $50,000 Mixed Event.  This tournament will consist of Seven Card Razz, Seven Card Stud, Omaha Hi-Lo, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo, No Limit Hold’em, Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Hold’em, and 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball.  In addition to the announcement of this new $50k tournament, ESPN will also be broadcasting the final table.

Another big move by Harrah’s involved getting rid of some of the mid-level Omaha and Stud events, and replacing them with more $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournaments.  The obvious reason for this move is because the mid-level buy-in Omaha and Stud tourneys didn’t draw many entrants.  On the other hand, last year’s $1,000 Stimulus Special was very popular and brought in over 6,100 players.  Harrah’s is hoping to recreate this level of enthusiasm with their additional $1,000 buy-in tournaments.

One more change to the 2010 WSOP from previous years is that Harrah’s will be taking more rake from the $1,000 and $1,500 buy-in tourneys.  Last year, Harrah’s Entertainment took a 9% rake while this year, they will be increasing that rake to 10%.  It will be interesting to see if these tournaments still draw big numbers with the increased rake.

Poker Tournament Gone Bad: Player strangles Opponent

Posted By : CarbonPoker December 17th, 2009

cuffs 2It’s not too uncommon to see poker players lose their temper after getting rivered in a big hand. Some of these players even like to go on huge rants where they blame everyone from the dealer to opponents at the table. However, very few of these people ever resort to physical violence after losing a poker hand.

Unfortunately, this was the case at the Bellagio in Las Vegas after pro poker player and author Tony Korfman became enraged during a tournament. The tournament Korfman got angry in was a $1,000 re-buy event, and he busted out on the bubble. According to eye witnesses, Korfman grabbed another player by the neck and began strangling him while screaming obscenities.

The scene was so bad that security guards actually had to pull Tony Korfman off of the unidentified player. Once security got Korfman away from the victim, they escorted him out of the Bellagio. Luckily for Tony, the opponent he attacked decided against presses charges for fear that Korfman would attack him again.

Korfman’s assault earned him a ban from the Bellagio. Noted professional poker player Bryon Devonshire was an eye witness during the whole ordeal, and he shared his account of the experience on the TwoPlusTwo forums.

Devonshire wrote, “I did not bubble. said punk bubbled then slammed his stack toward the guy that won the hand. punk was pissed because guy rivered him with a gutterball. then he had the balls to question weather the guy had him covered with part of his chips in the pot, part on the floor and part in the guy’s stacks. I then mother ****ed him for being a prick and chaos ensued. I always defend the dealers, floormen and players that don’t defend themselves. these types of punks should have been spanked when they were a kid. actually I’m sorry I didn’t pants him and take him over my knee. that would have been a great lesson for him. Tk”

The Casual Player’s Guide to Bankroll Management

Posted By : CarbonPoker December 8th, 2009

cash_pileThe concept of managing a poker bankroll is usually reserved for those who are really serious about the game.  In fact, most poker strategy books and articles focus solely on semi-pro and professional players when giving out bankroll advice.  The casual player is always looked at as an afterthought in this discussion since they mostly play for fun anyways.

However, this isn’t to say that casual players shouldn’t be concerned about their poker bankroll.  After all, pretty much every casual player has dreams of hitting a huge score in poker someday.  With this being the case, casual rounders also need to focus on bankroll management skills.

In regards to casual player bankroll management, one should always make sure to save up money that is only used for poker.  It’s tempting to use cash for bills or groceries on poker in hopes of winning more back, but it definitely isn’t practical.  If your bankroll ever runs out, wait until you’ve saved up the necessary money before choosing to play again.

Another bankroll management tip you should follow is playing at a limit below where you should be.  This ensures that you will never be playing over your head, and is a great way to build your bankroll up for the next level.  When you’re completely confident that you can make money at the next limit, move up a level.

One more good bankroll management tip for casual players is to never stop learning.  Some players may think they have poker down, and thus don’t need advice, but the truth is that nobody is too good to learn more about the game.  By learning more tips and poker strategy, you’ll not only improve your play, but also win more money in the long run; this extra cash can go towards funding your poker bankroll.
