Darvin Moon, Let Us Seduce You

Posted By : BungalowOfCards September 18th, 2009

darvin-moonDarvin Moon is building a name in the poker world that rivals his surname’s prominence in the night sky.

After bringing the competition at the World Series of Poker to its knees, Moon is poised to sit down and use his monster chip lead to win the thing outright in November.  And while he is the least experienced player at the table, you just can’t argue with the guy holding 30% of the chips.

But that’s just the beginning: in the four months since the much-ballyhooed Final Table was determined, Moon has had every opportunity to sign a major promotional deal with the online poker site of his choosing. Instead Moon has remained a lone gunner, stating that “there is not enough money in the world for someone to tell me what to do.”

Well, we here at CarbonPoker are not about to take no for an answer.  You hear that, Darvin?  We like you just the way you are.  With that in mind here are the

Sammy George Will Answer Tom Dwan’s London Challenge

Posted By : CarbonPoker August 25th, 2009

durrrrInternet poker sensation Tom “durrrr” Dwan is well known for his proposition bets.  Several months ago, he issued his biggest prop bet when he challenged anyone to play him in a $1 million heads-up poker game.  English poker player Sammy “Any Two” George agreed to the challenge and is set to play Dwan in his hometown of London.

The buy-in for the heads-up match will be $500,000 with the blinds set at $500/$1,000; it will last for 500 hands.  Matchroom Sport, which is holding the contest, has said that neither player can leave the game until one person has busted out or the 500 hands are up.

George is extremely excited about the heads-up contest and said, “I’m buzzing!  What could be sweeter than playing in the world’s biggest heads-up match against durrrr?  I’m stepping up to the plate and putting my money where my mouth is, and it will be an honor to represent my country against the best the U.S. has to offer.”

Sammy “Any Two” George has gained quite a bit of notoriety in the poker world for his philosophy that any two cards can win a poker hand before the flop.  George is mostly known as a cash game player, but he has also appeared on a few noted poker programs including the Million Dollar Challenge where he finished in 6th place which earned him $20,000.

As for Dwan, this will be the second million dollar challenge he is involved with since he is also playing one online.  His online million dollar challenge is against Patrik Antonius and it has gone on since February.  So far, 20,647 hands have been played and 50,000 hands will need to be logged before the contest concludes.  Dwan is also set to accept two more online challenges in the future from players to be determined.

Celebrity Success at the 2009 WSOP Main Event

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 15th, 2009

La BambaEveryone expects the professional poker players to do well in the World Series of Poker Main Event, but few would expect a non-poker celebrity to find success in the WSOP.  However, several celebrities made their way deep into the Main Event which surprised fans and players alike.  Here’s a quick look at the celebrities who had a successful WSOP Main Event run:

Lou Diamond Phillips

Phillips has been out of the limelight for a while as it’s been years since he starred in La Bamba, but the poker community definitely took notice of him after he went farther than any other non-poker celebrity in the Main Event.  Some thought Lou even had a chance to win it all before he finally busted out in 186th place.  For his excellent showing at the WSOP, Phillips received $36,600 which is more than almost 6,000 other players can say they received.

Jordan Farmar

Since Farmar had never even played Texas Hold’em before the 2009 Main Event, nobody expected the Los Angeles Lakers player to do anything.  However, Farmar defied the odds and made it through almost 3 days of play before being knocked out of the tournament.  This is quite an accomplishment for a true poker rookie! He must have had a few games with Lakers owner Jerry Buss.

Shane Warne

This former international cricket star showed that he has a presence on the poker table too as he was also able to make it to the third day of play in the Main Event.  Unfortunately, Warne’s flush was topped by a full house which is truly a bad beat for someone who was looking to double up on a great hand.

Jason Alexander

Alexander used his experience from TV shows like NBC’s Heads-up Championship to perform the same feat as Warne and Farmar in making it to the third day of the WSOP.  Jason, who is best known for his days as George Constanza on “Seinfeld”, will no doubt be back next year looking for a strong tournament run.

Day 7 WSOP Main Event Leaders

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 14th, 2009

wsop chipsWith 8 Tables and 64 players remaining in 2009’s Main Event of the WSOP, there are some extremely heavy hitters remaining.

This is the kind of competition that gets the poker world buzzing. Any time big names have potential to make the final table, it’s great for the sport.

Here are the chip leaders:

Darvin Moon – 9,745,000 (Table 2)
Billy Kopp – 8,2425,000 (Table 5)
Phil Ivey – 6,345,000 (Table 4)
Steven Begleiter – 6,315,000 (Table 1)
Lacay Ludovic – 5,965,000 (Table 4)
Antonio Esfandiari – 5,610,000 (Table 8 )
Antoine Saout – 5,195,000 (Table 7)

Big boys, right? In addition to the leaders, we’ve got some other notables lurking and still very much in contention. Joe Sebok, Jeff Shulman, Dennis Phillips, Prahlad Friedman and Adam Bilzerian are still in the hunt.

Any picks? Any prop bets on prop bets? I’d put up my house, car and family that says Ivey has some massive action on him making the final table.

We’ll keep you posted as Day 7 heats up and we get closer to November’s final table.

World Series of Poker Champion to Quit Poker

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 8th, 2009

ville-wahlbeckIt’s very rare for a poker player who is in the prime of their career to announce they’re quitting poker.  In fact, it is pretty rare for a player who can make a good living with the game to declare their intentions to walk away from the game.  However, Ville Wahlbeck is not concerned with what other players are doing, and plans to quit poker after the 2009 WSOP is over.

This is strange timing for Wahlbeck to make such an announcement since he won a gold bracelet in the $10,000 Mixed Hold’em World Championship, finished second in the $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship, took third in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud World Championship, and placed 6th in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship.  In addition to this, the Finn has also placed 13th in the Omaha Hi-Lo World Championship and took 12th place in the $2,500 Razz event.

All of these fantastic finishes have left Wahlbeck second in the WSOP Player of the Year standings and earned him $1,082,176 for the 2009 WSOP.  Even still Ville, who has been a professional for 6 years, is set on retiring from poker at the outset of this Series.  Wahlbeck does think that he’ll still play in tournaments from time to time, but he wants to take his life in a different direction.  He stated this in an interview when he said, “Maybe I won’t quit tournaments entirely, but I’ll definitely cut cash games.”

Ville used to work as a substitute teacher and as a freelance journalist but doesn’t see himself going back to those jobs stating, “Teaching is fun, but really rough.  And writing is a grind.  It’s fun, but it doesn’t pay nearly as well as poker.”  The only clues he gave about his future plans came when Wahlbeck mentioned, “Maybe if a good business opportunity comes along, I’ll take that.”

Ante Up For Africa at the 2009 WSOP

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 2nd, 2009

cheadleToday, at 2pm, the 2009 WSOP feel-good-tourney-of-the-year will be hitting the felt. Ante Up for Africa (AUFA), hosted by Don Cheadle and Annie Duke, is raising money for an undeniably great cause – the crisis in Darfur, Sudan.

With over $2Million raised, AUFA is hitting its third year. Expect bankable stars, poker pros and a fast-paced gaming. Hollywood A-listers, pros and philanthropists will be gaming for this worthy event.

Proceeds raised will go towards assisting survivors and supporting activism around the cause. If you’re down at the Rio, check out this event. It’s a pretty heavy topic, and one of the most worthwhile events of the entire World Series of Poker.

Matt Damon, Jason Alexandar, Sarah Silverman, Ben Affleck and many more are expected to be out.

GL to all of the players and the organization.

Jeffrey Lisandro Is Better at Poker Than You Are – Wins 3rd Bracelet of 2009

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 25th, 2009

jeffreylisandro1A familiar face won event #44 of the World Series of Poker. Jeff Lisandro took down his third (!) bracelet of the year, tying a WSOP record for most bracelets in a single year.

I really can’t get over the dominance. When you think of how many great players out there only have one (or none), It’s pretty astounding that a guy could walk in and make it a triple.

Lisandro’s latest win came on the $2,500 Razz event. The final table was comprised of Michael Craig, Warwick Mirzikinian, Steve Diano, Allen Bari, Ryan Fisler, Kenna James, Eric Rodawig and Lisandro.

Entering the final eight with a commanding chip lead, Lisandro went to his usual business of domination, knocking out anyone in his path. Michael Craig had the unfortunate duty of standing between Lisandro and his 3rd bracelet and got $116,405 for his troubles.

To add another notch on his belt, Jeff becomes the 4th player in WSOP history to win events in the three versions of stud. As you’ll remember, Lisandro won the Seven Card Stud initially and then the Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo.

When a guy is on a tear like this, it’s tough to imagine anyone really getting in his way. Without going overboard, do you think it’s too much to consider him winning another event? There are more Stud events coming up, and his domination could continue. Do you think he could take down Event 53 – $1,500 Stud Hi-Lo?

Hungarian Peter Traply Wins $5,000 No-Limit Shootout at WSOP

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 24th, 2009

traply-peter300 players stepped up to the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout at the 2009 World Series of Poker. Out of those, only five competitors made it to the final table on Day Three.

Andrew Lichtenberger, Nasr El Nasr, Danny Wong, Maxim Lykov and Peter Traply made it through.

After five hours of play, Traply emerged as the champion – besting Andrew Lichtenberger in heads up play. Lichtenberger vs. Traply was a back and forth battle, with some large swings.

The Hungarian took down $348,728 for the win, with $215,403 for Lichtenberger. In the final showdown, Traply won with a higher kicker to go with his tied two pair over Lichtenberger. It was a tight matchup that went to the wire.

2009’s World Series of Poker is rolling along faster than ever, and our coverage continues. Check back for WSOP results, news and previews.

durrrr Challenge Update – Dwan in the Lead

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 19th, 2009

durrrrTom Dwan is back on top after an impressive 15 hour long stint against Patrick Antonius in the durrrr challenge.

I usually stay away from reporting on the durrrrrrrrrrr challllenggggee because it’s a little bit boring and self-indulgent, but this was a pretty crazy swing.

For those of you who haven’t been keeping track, the last time I checked in, Dwan was down about $640K in their high-stakes wank fest of 50,000 hands.

After last night’s marathon session, durrrr leads by $726,000. That’s a staggering swing of hot cards and aggressive betting from two of online poker’s high rolling stars.

In the 15+ hour session, Antonius took down the largest pot ($477,556), but there was plenty of action – including more than 40 pots worth over $100K – for Dwan to clean up on.

Apparently these guys are going to be playing again soon this week, and I hope it stays this exciting. Who knew it would take so long to play this many hands?

I’ll keep you posted if anything cool like this happens again. In equally exciting news, I won $25 last night in a home game against my buddies…impressed?
