I would have to say it's for looks only.A fashion statement, like maybe to make others think they are some kind of a pro level player, maybe it's just because their favorite pro wears them. Take a look around , how many Uni- Bomber look alikes do you see ? I think it's to try to be someone their not. They sure don't make them play better poker.
Ladybug02

I believe the players where them for eye protection in case cards go flying.. The Kenye glasses wouldn't help much int that case maybe thats why they leave glasses at home

I have tried wearing sunglasses on a couple of occassions. Above all, I found it hard to see the cards and I felt like a poser. The one advantage that I found was that you can focus on a player without them noticing. You can watch their mannerisms and reactions in and out of hands, without making them uncomfortable. I don't think it hides your tells, but I do think it allows you to study other players more effectively.

Shades do not improve your game however, the feeling that you are one step ahead of those who do not wear shades gives you a little confidence boost that let's you bet at, and earn, those orphan pots

I believe that Phill Hellmuth is the reason for both eye and ear wear so popular at the tables today. He's hard to look at and impossible to listen to.

The casino that I frequent forbids ipods, headphones and bluetooth buds at the tables. They are sure that those are the equipment of collusion.

The casino does, however allow sunglasses. Of the players that choose to wear them, 0% are women and 100% are men (I use the term loosely) between the ages of 21-30. It certainly does not help their game. Most end up short stacked and look ridiculous to boot. It could be that sunglasses are used to hide their tears as the little old lady across the table takes their chips.
