Doyle Brunson inducted into Athletics Hall of Fame

Posted By : Comb Over-Under October 19th, 2009

doylebrunsonDoyle Brunson is no doubt one of the biggest legends of all-time in poker.  The 76 year-old man has not only won 10 WSOP gold bracelets along with numerous other tournaments, but he’s also become an icon in the process.  What’s even more amazing about Brunson is that he built part of his legend away from big-time poker tournaments by playing in dusty saloons throughout Texas.

Now Brunson has added a new chapter to his legacy by being added to the Hardin-Simmons University Athletics Hall of Fame.  For those who don’t know, Doyle was a standout track athlete and basketball player during his years at Hardin-Simmons.  Brunson was so good at basketball that he even attracted the attention of the NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers before a terrible leg break ended his career.

Unfortunately, his induction into the HSU Athletics Hall of Fame has take a little longer than it should have.  The presumed opinion is that Brunson’s poker playing has been frowned upon by the Baptist college and so it’s taken Doyle a lot longer to get into their Hall.  Brunson explained this by saying, “I know a lot of people went to bat for me, and they were more anxious for this to happen than I was at this point.  I felt a little snubbed, but on the other hand I did understand the reasons.”

He went on to explain this line of thinking by stating, “I was a second-class citizen back in those days.  Everybody thought you were a gangster or a mobster or something because you played poker.  It was hurtful, but I loved the game so much that it’s the only way I could compete anymore.  So that’s why I got into being a poker player.”  Doyle Brunson no longer has to feel snubbed any longer at HSU since they are now choosing to honor his sports accomplishments.

Who You Got? Public Can Now Vote for the Poker Hall of Fame

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 4th, 2009

pokerhalloffameThose who’ve always wanted to see their favorite poker players and personalities in the Poker Hall of Fame can now have a say in the matter.  That’s because Harrah’s Entertainment has decided to open up voting to the public.  All people have to do to vote for players is go to the World Series of Poker website and cast their vote(s).

Once all of the votes have been cast, the Hall of Fame committee will take the finalist and review the selections.  From there, the committee will then submit the finalists’ names to a group of selected media members as well as the living Hall of Fame members.  These two groups will then vote on who will be inducted into the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class.

People need to keep in mind that they can’t just nominate their online poker buddies since there is a specific list of requirements that must be met in order to enter the Hall.  The requirements are as follows:

- Must have played against top-notch poker competition.
- Must have gained the respect of one’s peers through consistent play.
- Must have withstood the test of time.
- Non-players need to have provided considerable contributions to the growth and success of poker.

The last two people to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame are Dewey Tomko and Henry Orenstein.  Tomko gained his credentials by finishing runner-up in two different WSOP Main Event final tables in addition to winning 3 gold bracelets.  Orenstein invented the hole-card camera which has been a driving force for poker’s success in recent years.

Some of the current members of the Poker Hall of Fame who are still active on the tables include Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, T.J. Cloutier, and Johnny Chan.  With part of the voting now up to the public, this could be the first year a member of the younger generation joins the Poker Hall of Fame.

Hit the Comments below to let us know who you want to see in the Poker Hall of Fame. (remember we’ve got a CommentOfTheWeek Contest going on. Win prizes!)

Nguyen Takes 50th in Aussie Mills

Posted By : CarbonPoker January 22nd, 2009

Only a short while ago, a shout was heard across the floor as big name Scotty Nguyen moved all in. Here’s how the play went down…

KK in his hand he smooth calls a 12,000 raise and opts to milk the hand. A 483 rainbow flop gave him what appeared to be a sign that the smooth call was right, once again he smooth calls a bet by his opponent this time 20,000.

The 5 on the turn gave some straight draw options that could have been threatening. Following a check by his opponent he moves his remaining 14,500 in the middle to be called by a K4 which put him in best position with KK vs 44. A 4 on the river brought supporters hopes crashing down as he was bested by a set of 4s.

Floptober Winners keep on coming!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 6th, 2007

The winners keep coming in Floptober, and there are a few juicier wins out there thanks to players flopping quads at the higher limits.

While there weren’t any crazy hands in this batch there certainly was some crazy chat. When Urban57 woke up with pocket rockets at a 25c/50c he quickly made it $1.50 to go, another player who had already folded made the comment “bluffer” in the chat box, Urban57 was called and soon flopped quad aces, giving him absolute nuts, I’m not sure what some people consider bluffing, but Im pretty sure quad aces should hold up in most spots, its a bit tough to call that a bluff!

Here is the list of winners and what they picked up for playing their big pocket pairs:
RUMONEY $25
sandy1234 $4
Mamoste $4
stuck333 $200
ChemicalAli $100
aaaargh1 $ 25
MrToad2U $10
nilefox3000 $100
DJFOOTS $10
minerva7 $4
HOLLOHEAD $10
Urban57 $50
JROCK3480 $200

Take your piece of this great promo just by playing in our cash games, 10 times the BB is yours if you flop quads no matter what limits your playing!

Stop reading and start flopping!

Floptober Fest Winners!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 5th, 2007

The winning has began, here the first Floptober Fest winners:

canalto $25
BOILERMAKER154 $25
Berrin $4
8erChamp $4
lordvali $25
Yetti32 $10
lukyhearts $25
bergie2 $50
0minus1 $10

The hand of the day from the winners has to go to 8erChamp. Here is how it played out:

The action was taking place at the 2c/4c table, Feline2770 raised to 16c from early position only to have the small blind, 8erChamp raise to 32c from the small blind. Feline2770 called and we saw a J-A-A flop. 8erChamp slyly checked and Feline2770 raised to 8c, 8erChamp raised to 16c and Feline2770 made the call. The flop was a 2 and 8erChamp turned up the heat betting out a $1, Feline2770 tried to counter moving all-in over the top for a grand total of $3.86. 8erChamp made the easiest call of his life, and the river card wasn’t even needed for the result, 8erChamp flipped up pocket rockets for flopped quad aces, while Feline2770 flipped up pocket jacks for a crushed full house, jacks over aces.

I’m not sure how your supposed to get away from that hand, I’m pretty sure that if I’m Feline2770 I lose all my money there too.

Congrats to all our winners for the day, keep playing those big pocket pairs, remember any flopped quads Queens or higher pay!

$50,000 Super Seat Giveaway!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 2nd, 2007

An Australian summer seems to be an exciting concept for our players, with 5 more booking their trip thanks to the $50,000 Super Seat Giveaway.

With a $15,000 trip to the Aussie Millions in January as first prize, and then four $8,750 packages to the Asia-Pacific Poker Tour event in Sydney as consolation prizes thousands of players tried to qualify for the final.

A lucky 520 players qualified for the final but only 5 of those were walking away with a trip Down Under, and while those knocked out early may have felt unlucky, our bubble boy went out in a ball of flames after he got him self into all kinds of trouble. With 6 left and only one person left not getting a live tournament seat, Bartyuk had a stack equal to just 5 big blinds and made a move from the small blind pushing in nearly half his stack, dannyboy904 moved in all-in over the top from the big blind and Bartyuk had a very tough decision. He must have really loved his hand as he called and put his tournament life on the line. Two aces on the flop put dannyboy904 in the drivers seat, and a Jack on the turn sealed the deal sending Bartyuk home in the bubble, with no trip to Australia.

With tournament seats assured for all the remaining players, the fight was on to upgrade from an APPT package, to a deluxe Aussie Millions package. The first player to lose this fight was flail1, he went out in fifth when a great flop just couldnt connect on the turn or river. He moved all-in after his blind special of 4-6 all clubs became an up and down straight draw as well as a flush draw, unfortunately for him he was called by Barcajuve who had picked up a low pair to go along with the straight draw. When all the draws were busted flail1 was out of the race, and Barcajuve and his pair of 5’s were still in the hunt.

It wasn’t long before Barcajuve was taking another scalp. SolarEclipse moved all-in from the small blind with A-8 off and was called by Barcajuve with A-10 off who was slightly in front. A slight lead became a win when he paired his 10 on the turn and SolarEclipse was himself totally eclipsed. Although unlike the sun, he at least gets an APPT package.

Dannyboy904 sent Bartyuk home in the bubble, but he too fell short of the major prize. He moved all-in after flopping a flush draw, pelicancruse made the call despite having nothing but 2 over cards. Those overcards became top pair on the turn, and improved to an ace high straight on the river to put the nastiest of nails in Dannyboy904’s coffin.

Down to two players and Barcajuve and pelicancruse didn’t waste any time, heads up only last 3 hands, and the first two hands didn’t even make it to the flop! On all three hands Barcajuve moved all-in preflop, on the third hand he finally got a call. All three times he had a picture card, unfortunately for him the third time wasn’t so lucky, pelicancruse had a higher picture card. The flop turn and river all managed to miss everyone and pelicancruse with her A-3 off topping Barcajuve’s K-4 off booked her place at the Aussie Millions at Crown Casino Melbourne in January.

It’s not too late to win a live tournament seat for yourself, our next APPT Grand Final is on this weekend.

Finally there is one other special project I’ve been working on, I don’t want to give anything away, but lets just say Carbon isn’t all about diamonds and strength.

What is a Spade royal flush worth?

Posted By : CarbonPoker September 2nd, 2007

How does $20,000 sound?

That’s what it was worth for ‘yvetje’ when she took down our Caribbean Stud jackpot.

With a total bet of $3, yvetje had a total winnings on the hand of $4 after the dealers hand didn’t qualify, however thanks to playing the jackpot she had her biggest pay day with us.

Thanks to a 20 cent jackpot bet, yvetje was able to really cash in with her spade royal flush winning her just over $20,000.

Her win has depleted the jackpot a little, but its back up to just over $2,000 so there is already some value there.

For more information on Caribbean Stud check out our Caribbean Stud page, and if you want to try your luck at Caribbean Stud you can find it under the Other Games tab in our client.

Just remember how far 20 cents can go, be sure to play the jackpot!
