Guy Laliberte is a Space Tourist, Will Return to Lose at Poker in 11 Days

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 30th, 2009

Guy-LaliberteCEO of Cirque du Soleil, French-Canadian billionare and noted high-stakes poker loser Guy Laliberte has blasted off into space. The space tourist launched on September 30, with an 11-day ‘mission’ aboard the International Space Station.

Canada’s first space tourist comes with a $35million price tag (which is only $15million more than Laliberte’s estimated online poker losses since the start of 2007).

I can only hope that he’s able to get some sort of Wifi up there to keep up his online appearances — or at least play a cash game against some of the other astronauts.

That’s a lot of money, but hey, if you’ve got it, spend it. I can’t think of anything more awesome than going into space. Laliberte is one of those crazy bazillionares who does pretty much whatever he wants. This is a dude who grew up as a fire-eater, reinvented the circus and has now seen our planet from space.

Think about it. This is a guy who has taken down a $1.2 million pot on High Stakes Poker, lost millions online and made billions away from the felt. Going into space is monumental, but it’s arguably not even the biggest thing he’s been a part of.

Take that, Lance Bass.

Female Poker Pros Disappoint in Amazing Race

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 30th, 2009

Tiffany and MariaThe poker world was happy to hear about female pros Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho appearing on the CBS reality TV show “The Amazing Race.”  Unfortunately, the poker world may not be so proud of the pair after their debut on the 15th installment of the Amazing Race.

After leading off the race by saying they were non-profit workers from LA – benefiting the homeless, the girls were off to a pretty good start.

Unfortunately, all of the profits from this charity go towards funding both of the girls’ poker careers.  Eventually, a female fan of the pair saw them at the airport and went on about how great they are at poker.  The bluff got sniffed out and the girls were left looking like asses.

The girls jumped out to an initial lead, but nearly got knocked out when they finished last in the Japanese-game-show-wasabi-bomb eating section of the race. After some duck herding, they were back in resasonable shape.

Overall, I don’t think they come off as likeable. By lying about what they do for a living, and then pretty much getting busted immediately, they make poker players look especially sleazy.  Factor in how annoying they are, and they’re on the fast track to being ‘that annoying team’ that viewers want to see lose.

Tune in each Sunday at 8pm (after a long day of watching football, it’s a good way to get some quality time in with the wife without leaving the couch) to see how the girls do throughout the rest of the action.

Building a Poker Bankroll

Posted By : CarbonPoker September 29th, 2009

cards dice chipsWe hear poker strategists talk about having a bankroll for poker all of the time.  So obviously, the subject of poker bankrolls isn’t an earth-shattering concept.  However, most of the advice is limited to simply telling people they need to have a decent bankroll before embarking on a poker career.

Few poker authors will go much deeper than this which really doesn’t help much in the end.  It’s much more helpful to know how to actually build the bankroll so that you can hit the ground running.  Here are some tips for building that all-important poker bankroll.

Bankroll Basics

As far as building your actual bankroll, you should begin saving your money before actually playing in any real games.  This means simply practicing and learning strategy for however long it takes you to accumulate a sufficient amount of money to play with.  A good rule of thumb is to have at least 200 big blinds for the cash game limit you wish to play at or 100 tournament buy-ins.

Bankroll Mindset

It’s very important that you have a set amount of money dedicated to poker when playing the game.  After all, you don’t want to be using money which is supposed to be set aside for your electric bill.  People who do things like this typically play scared because they are afraid to lose the money they’re using.  And when the time comes, you won’t have the nerve to make all-in calls or crucial bluffs since you are worried about using the money for something else.  So make sure to have a poker-only bankroll so that you aren’t afraid to make the necessary moves when it comes time.

Bankroll Limits

Even the best players in the world have weeks or even months where they play bad and lose money.  With this being the case, you need to have a bankroll that is able to endure long losing streaks, and play at a limit where you can sustain your bankroll over a period of time.  Keep in mind that if you can’t survive a month-long losing streak without going bust then you are probably at a limit that is too high.

How to Play Small Ball Players

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 28th, 2009

Chips ahead behindOne of the increasingly popular poker strategy methods that is catching fire among everyone is small ball poker.  Ever since Daniel Negreanu coined this phrase and started preaching its worth on seemingly every poker website in the world, many players have taken up the small ball approach.  And with so many people utilizing small ball poker these days, it can be a difficult thing to play against.

Of course there are ways to outplay small ball players just like there is with any other poker strategy and you just have to know how to do it.  The first thing to keep in mind when playing against small ball players is that you have to be able to identify them.  This is easier said than done since there is usually a table full of people that you also need to scout as well.

But identifying the small ball player is made easier once you recognize that they play a wide range of hands aggressively yet only use small bets and raises to control the pot size.  The reason why small ball players only use smaller bets is because they think their skill is enough to win out in the end.  That is why the next part of playing against a small ball player is so effective.

And that next part is using big bets and raises against these players when you’re isolated with them.  Small ballers hate to commit too many of their chips to one pot so if you can throw out big bets or even go all-in on bad flops against them then you’ve got a great chance of stealing a pot.  Just make sure that you don’t get too focused on the small ball player(s) though – especially if there is a whole table full of other people to deal with.

Zimbler Breaks Record For Longest Poker Session, Does Gumby Impression

Posted By : BungalowOfCards September 25th, 2009

zimblerThe World Series Of Poker Europe isn’t all about tight hands and pressure betting, it turns out. Paul Zimbler proved that Thursday (or should I say on Tuesday through Thursday) by successfully breaking the world record for the longest recorded continuous poker session at London’s Casino at the Empire.

Zimbler played 183 heads up sessions over more than 74 hours, winning a remarkable 102 of those and altogether raising an impressive £35,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Some of that total was donated by the substantial lineup of pros Zimbler faced, including Doyle Bruson, Annette Obrestad, Phil Hellmuth, and Mike Matusow.  Matusow had by far the toughest match, playing Zimbler in the 74th hour and through the threshold of the record, which now stands at 74 hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds.

Matusow employed a mock-him-so-he-keeps-playing strategy, which—combined with the large crowd of people hollering support at him—might have been the main reason Zimbler was in visibly rough shape by the time he broke the record.  Or maybe it was that he hadn’t slept in three calendar days.

It should go without saying that you should not attempt a record like this yourself.  That said, if you were thinking about it, let that dream go.  I get that you have played some epic sessions, but Zimbler was playing in a substantially more draining environment than your den, and was wearing clothes, not a robe.  And let’s not forget he was doing it for the children.

Good work, Paul.  Now get some sleep.

Strip Poker on the Wii? Thanks, Japan!

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 25th, 2009

wii sexy pokerHey Gamers! If you’ve got 500 Wii Points laying around, you can pick up a little bit of (slightly creepy) poker action.

Wii’s “Sexy Poker” is a downloadable game that lets you play Texas Hold’em and Blackjack against a dealer in an attempt to de-clothe anime babes.

Yep. Use those motion censors remotes to hit, stand, bet … and then reap the benefits of a bikini-wearing animated character. The game features no nudity, which is a good thing for me, bad thing for weirdoes.

I’ve never been much for poker video games, or animated nudity, so I’ll take a pass on Sexy Poker.

The game is rated 17+ and is banned in Australia. They may piss on video poker machines, but those Aussies are gamer-prudes!

If anyone has played this, hit up the comments and let me know. My Wii is strictly for bowling, so I’m not going to find out about this game first hand.

Good Risks in Poker

Posted By : Comb Over-Under September 25th, 2009

stack-of-chipsIf you’ve chosen to play poker for money then you have taken plenty of risks already.  In fact, the game of poker is full of risks so it’s not even worth going on about this.

But as we all know, the best players in poker will wind up winners in the end so there has to be something to these risks that people take.  And this leads up to a good point in that there are both good and bad risks to take in poker.

The first risk that you’ll often find rewarding is going all-in during tournament play when possible.  Now this is certainly a very risky move since you put your tourney life on the line every time you go all-in.  And there are a lot of pros like Phil Hellmuth who would preach against going all-in as long as you can avoid it.  But if you don’t try to double up every so often in a tournament then you’ll rarely be able to win the entire thing.  Just make sure to pick your opportunities correctly.

Another solid risk you should take in poker is making pre-flop raises.  Pre-flop raises allow you to both find out what other players might be holding as well as knock other people out of a hand who might just be looking to hit something on the flop.  Just make sure you’re holding at least high connectors like K-Q or a premium hand before raising.

Another school of thought here is pre-flop raising with a mid-level pocket pair. It can be a sneaky way of hitting trips on the flop – and still leave you an out if you’re grossly overmatched when the flop is on the table.

And while speaking of risks, you should know when not to take them too.  Obviously it will sometimes be tough to tell when you’re taking a bad risk, but there will be many times when you do know.  For instance, if you’re holding a second rate hand and a rock is raising like crazy then you are probably beat. Don’t take the risk of calling.  Avoiding unnecessary risks is immensely helpful. Save your chips for a good risk.
