Comment Of the Week Winner

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 27th, 2009

photo-commentThat was nearly a record number of comments this week!

I really had my work cut out for me. I read each and every comment that hit the walls on our articles.

As usual, there were some great ones. But I picked just one:

“There are three testaments of poker everyone should know:

1. Don’t ask a dealer what the odds are on strip poker
2. When playing Caribbean poker, don’t play with a fake Jamaican accent
3. Never butt into a private poker game and ask “mind if I join in?” ”

Really – it was #2 that sealed the deal for me.

Congrats to RaitisValodze for the $109 Coupon win. Your account is going to be credited today!

As for this week, you’ve got another 7 days to wow me with your comments! Next week’s winner will get a $1o9 coupon as well.

Good luck!

Playing Suited Connectors in Sit and Go’s

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 27th, 2009

suited connectorMost Sit and Go players realize that their stacks are limited, and the tournaments go quick so certain hands lose value in this situation.  Suited connectors are definitely one type of hand which loses value in a Sit and Go tournament since their main value comes from giving you a straight that can take down a major pot.  And in Sit and Go’s, smaller stacks mean smaller pots which means you can’t take down as big of pots with your straights.

However, you can still use suited connectors to your advantage in Sit and Go’s as long as you remember one thing: don’t place too much value on them.  Instead, you need to look for opportunities where you can get in multi-person pots as cheaply as possible.  And the best opportunities for doing this present themselves in the early parts of Sit and Go’s because the blinds are lower.

With the blinds being lower, there will be a lot more limpers which means this is the perfect chance for you to limp in with them in a multi-person pot.  Of course you’ll want to wait until you’re at least in early-late position when limping since you don’t want to risk getting raised by someone else at the table.

Once the blinds raise into the higher levels, suited connectors aren’t nearly as valuable if you’ve got one of the bigger stacks.  That’s because there will be fewer players still alive, and the blinds will be so high that you can’t risk calls and bets for an outside shot at a straight.  Of course, if you’re one of the short stacks left in a Sit and Go then suited connectors can be valuable when trying to steal blinds and small pots from other players.  Plus they’re also a solid hand to push with if you’ve got no other options than to push or fold.

Cousins of Ron Mexico on Bad Beats and Online Poker

Posted By : Cousins of Ron Mexico July 24th, 2009

bad beat cousins of ron mexicoCousins of Ron Mexico, winner of the first Blogger Poker Tourney a few weeks back, hits us up with a guest post that talks about claims of rigging in the online poker world. Got a guest post you want to share? Hit us up on Carbon Poker’s Twitter.

I’ve been playing poker online for a while. That was probably obvious. I’m the guy who won the first ever blogger poker tournament on CarbonPoker. Not just any donk off the street can accomplish something like that on his first go around.

In my many years of experience playing on the internet, I’ve tried all the sites. Some are better than others, with CarbonPoker being the best. (I’m not just saying that because it’s in the contract I signed without reading. Really.) No matter what site you’re on, there’s one constant. One platitude you’ll read in the chat box just about every time you sit down to play.

It comes after a bad beat, usually by the avatar that just lost a coinflip. The wording is oftentimes different, but the sentiment always the same – THIS SITE IS FIXED!

It’s usually phrased as a “[Site Name] Special.” Or “only on [Site Name].”

And this doesn’t just come Aces are cracked. You’ll read this after just about any superior starting hand goes down. Just the other night I was short-stacked and went all-in with Ah 10c. A big stack called and showed Ac Jc. After the 4th heart came on the flop the chat box read, “only on [Site Name] lol.”

I felt great. The site wanted me to win the tournament! I was destined to become rich! The cards were virtually stacked in my favor!

And I got knocked out about 10 minutes later.

The sad thing is that I think there might be people out there who believe what they type. People who put actual money on the internet and then assume when they lose to an underdog, that the site determined the winner. Why would you play? And what could a site possibly have to gain? It makes no sense.

Then again, what do I care? I’ve got CarbonPoker on my side.

How A-Q Can Lose You a Lot of Money

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 23rd, 2009

ace-queenheartsIf you’ve been sitting at the table for a while waiting for good cards to fall into your hand then A-Q is definitely an attractive prospect.  However, you should also beware of A-Q because it’s a hand that can lose you a bunch of money.  Sure A-Q is one of the top 10 hands you can receive in poker, but it’s still not A-A, K-K, Q-Q, A-K, or even J-J.

But there are some poker players who make the mistake of treating A-Q like it’s one of these hands, and so they’ll do things like play it in early position or in middle position after a pot has been raised.  Sometimes you can get away with doing this, but the majority of the time you’re going to get burned when playing A-Q out of position.

That being said, A-Q is a solid hand to play in middle or late position when you’re looking at an unraised or unopened pot.  But you’ve also got to remember that A-Q is not a hand where you’re going to be dominating other people with from the outset as it’s only a drawing hand.  Any time you’re up against A-A, K-K, Q-Q, and A-K you’re already dominated while going up against J-J is a coin flip at best.

You can get value out of an A-Q hand in certain situations though like when you’re on an extremely loose-aggressive table.  Here people will play hands that A-Q has the potential to dominate which means you can actually be ahead of some of the players who are making bets and raises.  However, you’ll want to avoid playing A-Q too much on tight, nitty tables where players are mainly sticking to premium hands that can potentially have A-Q dominated.  Just remember that the main thing is not to overvalue A-Q and treat it like a premium hand.

Playing Single Ace Hands

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 23rd, 2009

red-chip-stackMany aggressive poker players like to bet just about any time they get an ace in their hand.  And it usually doesn’t matter to them what the other card they’re holding is as long as that ace is there.  Their reasoning is that an ace is the best card in the deck so it gives them an excuse to bet out in an attempt to scare other players.  However, there’s a big difference between holding A-Q and A-3 which is only the first thing you need to consider when playing A-x.

Another thing you need to look at when you’re dealt a single ace is where you are on the table.  Playing A-5 in late position after other people have limped in isn’t such a bad decision, but playing the same drawing hand in early position is a sure way to lose money over the long run.  And never make the decision to play this type of hand in early position just because it’s suited.

When you do decide to play A-x suited, or any kind of ace hand where you’re drawing for a straight, make sure not to overvalue your hand.  Committing half of your stack to the pot just because you’re drawing for a nut flush is not a good idea so you’ve got to try and control the pot with checks, calls, and small bets.

The key thing is that you don’t want to pay too much to see flops with just a single ace in your hand.  If you do get a drawing hand then just remember to keep the pot within a reasonable range.  But if you can’t get in the hand for cheap then fold your ace hand unless you are holding A-K.  A-K is a solid hand because it gives you a shot at two top pairs and has the ability to net you a straight as well.

ESPN Will Begin Airing 2009 WSOP on July 28th

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 22nd, 2009

espnThose who are tired of seeing reruns of the 2008 World Series of Poker on ESPN will be relieved to hear that the World Wide Leader has plans to start airing footage from the 2009 WSOP on July 28th.  And ESPN will be showing much more of the Main Event through this footage since so many people have requested it.  In fact, there will even be a 24 hour period of time where ESPN will only be airing the 2009 Main Event.

The only catch to this increased coverage of the WSOP Main Event is that ESPN will show just one other bracelet event.  Last year, the network showed 3 other bracelet events in addition to the Main Event.  The lone other bracelet event they will show is the $40,000 40th Anniversary No-Limit Hold’em tournament that was held to commemorate 40 years of the WSOP.

In fact, the 40th Anniversary event will kick-off ESPN’s coverage of the 2009 WSOP as it begins at 8pm ET on July 28th.  This will last two hours while ESPN will have two more events following this one in the WSOP Champions Invitational and the Ante Up for Africa charity tourney; both of these tournaments will be shown for two hours as well.  The Ante Up for Africa tournament is especially interesting since many celebrities took part in it including Ben Affleck, Brad Garrett, Charles Barkley, Matt Damon, Ray Romano, Adam Sandler, and Don Cheadle.

On August 18th, ESPN will begin showing two hour episodes of the WSOP Main Event with each day being shown for two hours.  So Day 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D will all have their own separate episodes, and ESPN will continue like this until Day 8 is shown on November 3rd.  The final table of the 2009 Main Event begins on November 7th and will conclude on November 10th.

Big Slick – How to Play Ace King

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 22nd, 2009

Big Slick_1Many players eyes will light up when their eyes fall on AK as their pocket cards. However many players will also complain that they’re constantly getting beat on AK, when they should have the odds in their favour. So why is AK rated as such a good starting hand?

The strength behind AK comes in its ability to make other players fold when they shouldn’t. If you’re significantly raising before the flop, you ought to be able to make most players fold with hands that won’t stand up – say anything less than pocket 10s. However it must be kept in mind that if you raise too much then the only hands that will call are AA and KK – the only two hands that have you pretty solidly beat.

The trick is raise enough so that you’re not pushing low stacked players all in, as its probably not in your best interests to fall into a heads up race with only a slight percentage in your favour. You will want to force players out, not go all in with your chips.

AK loses much of its value if blinds are small relative to stack size, players are short stacked or if players are pot committed and unlikely to lay down their hand.

Keep in mind that even if you’re only stealing blinds or chasing out early raises, you’re still winning cash. AK isn’t a hand to slow-play and it’s a dangerous hand to fall in love with. If you see a flop of 10 8 8, you lose a lot of your value and confidence in your hand.

Just remember this: AK is the most dominant DRAWING hand in poker. A pair of deuces beats it. Play it aggressively at the beginning and don’t be afraid to get out of the way if you early bets don’t work and a flop comes right against you.

Five Card Draw General Tips

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 21st, 2009

poker1-main_Full5 card draw is one of the most simple poker games around. It consists of 5 cards, 2 betting rounds and 1 draw. As a result strategy is fairly limited. While common poker strategy and tactics such as betting and bluffing can be applied, the lack of betting rounds and quicker game serves to limit more in depth strategy to a point. However the following pointers should still be considered.

Hand selection – the starting hands you can play in draw largely depend on your opponents and the number of them left in the game. At a loose table – high pairs and 3 draw is acceptable, at tighter table’s higher pairs or better only should be your starting mark. Flush and straight draws should only be played from late position and any sets, or two pair should see you making a raise before the flop. Although the problem with two pair is unless they hold a premium pair then they risk being out drawn by an opponent.

Position – once again a key factor in the game, if you’re last to draw you can see how many cards previous players draw. A good tactic here is to stand pat if you have already raised in the previous round. Bluffing under such circumstances is much more successful as standing pat usually serves to kill the betting action after the draw.

Drawing cards – the amount of cards a player draws says a lot about the strength of the hand they are holding
3 cards – probably a pair
2 cards – a pair and a high card, or chasing a flush draw.
1 card – chasing a straight or flush draw. Or two pair.

The amount of cards you draw can also be used to mislead your opponents. For example if your holding high trips, try drawing one card to signal 2 pair, a weaker hand than what you are actually holding.
