Sit N Go Strategy

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 31st, 2009

cardschipsSit N Go’s are the perfect practice arena for final table play. Unlike ring games and live cash games, when a player is eliminated, there isn’t one waiting to fill the emptied seat. Adapting to an ever diminishing number of players is a skill that definitely needs to be mastered for the aspiring player.

When a player gets eliminated from the table, it effectively means two things for those still seated, the blinds will come around quicker, and your paying more for each hand. Think of it this way, if there are 4 players left and the blinds are at 50 /100, your paying approx 37 in blinds each hand, or 150 every 4 hands.

If a player is eliminated then your now playing 150 every 3 hands, or 50 a hand. As a result you are forced to gamble more to counter the ever increasing blinds.

Chip stack and blind size should influence your hand selection strategy and hence how loose your play is. So naturally as a table progresses, blinds climb higher and players get eliminated, it is going to become necessary to loosen up your playing style and gamble more. Further more when there are 9 players seated at a table, there is likely to be 2 rather good hands amongst them, either AK or high pockets ect, however as there are only 3-4 players left, the chance of someone having such a good hand is diminished greatly and hence you can play a lot more aggressive with mid range cards such as pocket 8’s

The final argument for the tighter earlier, looser later strategy is the pay out structure. Most Sit n Gos and final tables will pay out the largest percentage to the top 3. Hence you should aim for 3rd. Once you have made the money, it is a lot easier to gamble up for 1st. You’ve already turned a profit, so change from the tighter strategy and gamble to make more.

CarbonPoker’s Caribbean Stud Jackpot Went Off!

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 30th, 2009

cash_pileOne of the most popular side games at CarbonPoker is Caribbean Stud poker, and this is why:

Early this morning, the Caribbean Stud jackpot paid off CarbonPoker player, ZuluTime.

At about 3am, ZuluTime won $30,437.63 on the $1 Caribbean Stud Table as his Royal Flush beat the dealer’s pair of Kings. This game only took 7 seconds. Caribbean Stud is quick and easy. If you beat the qualified dealer’s hand, you win your wager — and if you’ve played the jackpot bet, you’re eligible for that.

It sure pays off the play the jackpot, right?

The Caribbean Stud tables get a lot of action, and all of that helps increase the jackpot payout. The jackpot has already been re-seeded and is waiting for the next lucky winner.

Here’s the jackpot structure:

Royal Flush – 100%

Straight Flush – 10%

Four of a Kind – $100

Full House – $75

Flush – $50

Congrats to ZuluTime for the major win. CarbonPoker has paid out some big time jackpots. Two Bad Beats and numerous, smaller Caribbean Stud jackpots have been triggered. If you want in on the action, you’ve gotta hit the tables!

Aces in Pot Limit Omaha

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 30th, 2009

acesMany PLO amateurs run into trouble when playing aces as they don’t understand how Omaha differs from Holdem. In Holdem holding a pocket high pair, you have pretty good odds to win the pot. However in Omaha many hands have an equal starting rank.

A hand with AA XX only has a 51% chance when played heads up against JsTs9c8c. What a player ought to be looking for are the big hands, not just a high pair. Straights, flushes, big sets, are what you need to guarantee yourself the pot.

So aces should be played a little more conservatively. If there is a raise preflop, settle for the call rather than re-raise.

However there are still times when aces should be played aggressively pre flop. If there has been action and a raise will force a lot of players to fold and commit three quarters of your stack, then make the bet by all means.

You still have a slightly better chance in heads up play anyways. By playing more conservatively preflop you can win some big pots when the flop falls your way and save yourself a lot of cash when it doesn’t.

Got it? Got it.

Four Things That Piss Me Off About Home Games

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 29th, 2009

home gameFirst off, home games are great. It’s pretty much a license for a dude’s night – full of draaanks, cards and BS. But being the generally irritable blogger that I am, there are obviously things that rub me the wrong way (besides leaving the friendly glow of my computer).

Keep in mind that these things are minor annoyances – not in the range of things like Brett Favre, Phil Helmuth that make me want to drop kick my laptop whenever I read more about them – but I think you’ll be able to relate.

This is in no way a comprehensive list…but just a few fresh items.

Quick-Win Walkers

The best way to never get invited back to a home game is to win a big pot early and to split. Nobody’s in a friendly to make some bank. The tough fact is: if you win early, you’re probably going to have to piss half of it away during the night.

Cell Phones

These are the worst of the “reasons to leave the game” category. They hold up the action in the most infuriating way possible. I don’t want to hear your talking to your girl/lawyer/parole officer. The only acceptable reasons to leave the table:

  • 45 second piss break (maximum)
  • Getting a round of drinks
  • Bank Machine run when things get out of hand
  • Paying pizza guy
  • Getting a lighter

That’s it.

“Pros”

And by Pros, I of course mean, “douche bags”. Obviously if you’re a friend’s friend and you get invited out for some casual poker you should wear some poker gear, dark glasses and headphones.

This isn’t poker after dark! These guys are good to have around when they lose, but the smugness that goes down after anyone folds to them is pretty insufferable. You can spot a ‘pro’ (even without gear). They’re the guys who are constantly running their mouths about what you’ve got, why they just made the most brilliant fold on felt and talking about how they were too good to be put on Face the Ace.

These dudes are especially embarrassing if you’re the one who brought them. Screening your poker buddies is a definite must. Average Frank from the office might be watching Rounders everyday on his iPod on bus ride home. You’ve been warned.

The “do all these red cards beat your ______” Guy

Yes. Yes it does, a$$hole. This is also the “holds his cards way to far out” guy and the “guy who finds out the chip value 90 minutes into the game”. He’s preferable to the ‘pro’, but it’s definitely less easy to swallow when this guy beats you on a suck out.

If you manage to avoid all this, you should have a good home game. Did I miss anything? Hit the comments to let me know what drives you mental during home games.

WTF is a Double Up SnG?

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 29th, 2009

carbonpoker-lobbyNew feature time!

With the newest release of CarbonPoker software, things have been pretty busy around here. One of the great new features that has been keeping us busy is the Double Up SnG.

For those of you that haven’t played one of these bad boys, here are the general details:

Standard SitnGo beginning – the tourney begins when the pre-determined number of entrants have registered.

The big difference comes in the payout. Let’s use a 10 person SnG as the example. The payout structure awards the top half of players with double their buy-in and for the bottom half… nothing!

In the 10 person example, once the field is down to 5 participants, the tourney is over and payouts are awarded. Instead of a smaller percentage of winners, 50% doubles up while 50% cries quietly.

There are some interesting strategies that go on during this style of play. Staying tight near the bubble is a must — letting other players be the table hero and finally bouncing out the final competitor.

Thoughts on the new tourneys? Hit up the comments and let us know!

CarbonPoker Site Updates and New Features

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 28th, 2009

carbonpokerpicAre you ready for some updates? Trust me, it’s a lot more exciting than it sounds.

I know I work here, but CarbonPoker’s software was great already. With industry-leading features, tables and game play in place, these new refinements will definitely enhance your gaming experience.

My favorite new feature is the All In or Fold No Limit Texas Hold’em SnGs. The AIOFNLTHESNG are exactly how they sound: with each hand you either go all in or fold. Sure, it’s a definite gamble, but they’re really fun to play. During beta testing, I was all over that.

Levels for the AIOFNLTHESNG:

  • $2 + $0.16
  • $5 + $0.40
  • $10 + $0.80

Other features involve new No Limit and Pot Limit Omaha tournaments, Half Pot Limit cash games, and Double Up SnGs.

Login to your account to see the new features and updates in action. Trust me; you’re going to love them.

The Best Pot Limit Omaha Starting Hands

Posted By : CarbonPoker July 27th, 2009
1. AAKK 6. AA99 11. KQJT
2. AAJT 7. AAXX 12. KKTT
3. AAQQ 8. 89TJ 13. KKAQ
4. AAJJ 9. KKQQ 14. KKAJ
5. AATT 10. KKJJ 15. KKAT

The thing to keep in mind with Pot Limit Omaha hands is that you want to build a hand with as many outs as possible. Straights, flushes, two pairs, sets ect, are all the bread and butter of your game. So that means you’re going to want to play hands with connecting cards, wrap cards, double high value pocked pairs – all combinations that will give you an edge.

Suited cards will also give your hand added value. Four connecting cards will particularly give your hand an edge. For example if your holding 89JT then combined with possible flop combinations you have about 30 possible straight draws. The higher the connecting cards, the better value as they will give higher valued straights.

Any good hand selection strategy not only includes what hands to play, but also what hands to avoid. Sometimes, however, you may have cards that are worth playing, but will very rarely win. Such trap hands are something to watch out for, as they will bleed chips from you. In PLO the first trap hand to avoid is a small pair. Small pairs (anything lower than nines) are basically worthless in PLO games.

Low wrap hands are also another trap hand a player needs top be cautious of. It may seem like you have a good chance of making a 6 high straight and although it seems strong it is in fact easy to beat because of its low value. The same can be said of low flush draw hands. While these are not as bad as low pair or straight draw hands, they are still weak hands for two reasons. First because they are still a draw hand, and you will only complete them percentage of the time, and secondly because of their low value.
