Jeffrey Lisandro Wins 2nd Bracelet of 2009

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 22nd, 2009

Winning a World Series of Poker bracelet is a pretty amazing feat. Only 57 are won each year – out of thousands of competitors. The 2009 WSOP is 37 Events old, and there have already been three double bracelet winners.

Online powerhouse, Brock Parker; poker royalty, Phil Ivey; and now Jeffrey Lisandro have a 2009 bracelet for each wrist.

Lisandro took down his second piece of WSOP jewelry in the $10,000 Buy-In Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo World Championship. The first came from the 7 Card Stud win by Lisandro earlier in the WSOP.

Out of a $1,541,600 prizepool, 16 players were in the money. Lisandro took down $431,656 from a final table that included Doyle Brunson, Freddy Rouhani and Justin Smith.

Here are the top 10 Finishers:

1. Jeffrey Lisandro ($431,656)
2. Farzad Rouhani ($266,804)
3. Mike Wattel ($176,605)
4. Francis Mariani ($124,684)
5. Yan Chen ($93,513)
6. Abraham Mosseri ($74,258)
7. Doyle Brunson ($62,234)
8. Justin Smith ($54,896)
9. Anthony Rivera ($41,885)
10. Perry Friedman ($41,885)

Who do you think has a shot at another bracelet this year? Hit the comments to talk it out.

Playing Tournament Hands on the Bubble

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 22nd, 2009

There is a lot of general poker strategy on the Internet that translates well to many situations.  However, large, multi-table poker tournaments often have their own set of rules that can’t be solved by simply following run-of-the-mill strategy.  This is especially true when you’re approaching the bubble of a big tournament since play gets tighter, the blinds grow larger than you’d like them to, and your stack size may be in jeopardy.

This host of factors means you’re going to have to know how to handle different situations that may arise on the tournament bubble.  To put this into illustration, let’s set up a scenario where you have 60,000 chips, and are trying to survive past the bubble where 70 players will cash.  There are currently 80 players left which means 10 more have to bust out for you to finish in the money.  The rest of the stacks at your 10 player table look like this:

Blinds: 1,000/2,000
124,000
98,500
91,400
75,300
68,700
54,200
52,800
44,900
34,100

Let’s assume you’re holding JJ pre-flop and raise the previous bet to 18,000 chips.  Everyone else folds except for the big blind (91,400) who three-bets you with a re-raise of 60,000.  This would put you all-in and has you wondering if it’s worth the call since the big blind could have AA or KK.  Of course this player could also have AK, TT or smaller, or simply be trying to bluff you with this big re-raise.

Table images aside, there are a lot of factors you need to go through before deciding to make this call.  First off, you’ll no doubt be one of the short stacks if you fold which is a big consideration.  Another thing is that it’s unlikely a bigger stack would bluff you in this situation without at least having AK.  Faced with such a tough situation, you’ve really got to decide what your goal is for the tournament.

If you hang on and cash then you’re not going to be making a whole lot more money than the buy-in; this would seem like a blown chance considering you’re probably a middle stack in the whole field as well as the table.  Plus a successful call here could leave you as the big stack at the table, and one of the biggest stacks in the tournament.

On the other hand, if your bankroll is tight then you’ll no doubt need this cash, and busting out certainly won’t accomplish this goal.  In the end, you’ve really just got to decide what cashing means to you, and if you can afford to go for the big prize or not since there’s no clear right or wrong decision in regards to the call.

Jerry Buss skips Los Angeles Lakers Parade to play Poker

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 19th, 2009

jerry-bussWhen the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 4 games to 1 in the NBA Finals, it marked another joyous occasion for one of the league’s most storied [and annoying] franchises.  The win also marked what many would consider to be another great one for Los Angeles Lakers owner, Dr. Jerry Buss.

But when the team was celebrating its victory along with 150,000 fans at a parade in downtown Los Angeles, Jerry Buss was nowhere to be found.

Buss has noted in the past that he hates the attention and traffic that championship parades bring. Before you go ahead and call Buss a total party-scrooge, have you ever tried driving across LA? It’s plenty hard enough without 150K screaming bandwagon fans, celebs and confetti littering the streets.

So instead of attending the parade, Buss did something WAY better. He was playing poker at the Bicycle Casino, which is just 10 miles from the parade route.

As far as billionaires go, that’s a pretty bad ass move. “Yeah, instead of patting myself on the back for another NBA Championship, I think I’ll go grind out a few more wins.” If I was that rich, I’d do the same…only in a helicopter above the parade with more realistic looking hair.

Jerry Buss has been a high stakes poker player for decades now, but he’s also had some solid finishes in poker tournaments too.  His most notable finish was a third place effort in a 1991 World Series of Poker Seven Card Stud event while he also took second place in a 2003 World Poker Tour freeroll invitational too.

Aside from playing in numerous cash games and tournaments over the years, Buss has also managed to appear on poker television shows as well.  He’s been featured on GSN’s High Stakes Poker in addition to the NBC late night poker series Poker After Dark.

The fact that Buss has been on poker TV shows is a bit puzzling since he normally hates the limelight.  After his Lakers won the championship, Jerry’s son Joey Buss accepted the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy in his place.

Buss is easily my favorite part of the Lakers franchise — which might not be saying too much — but this poker-during-the-parade stunt really moved him up another notch.

durrrr Challenge Update – Dwan in the Lead

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 19th, 2009

durrrrTom Dwan is back on top after an impressive 15 hour long stint against Patrick Antonius in the durrrr challenge.

I usually stay away from reporting on the durrrrrrrrrrr challllenggggee because it’s a little bit boring and self-indulgent, but this was a pretty crazy swing.

For those of you who haven’t been keeping track, the last time I checked in, Dwan was down about $640K in their high-stakes wank fest of 50,000 hands.

After last night’s marathon session, durrrr leads by $726,000. That’s a staggering swing of hot cards and aggressive betting from two of online poker’s high rolling stars.

In the 15+ hour session, Antonius took down the largest pot ($477,556), but there was plenty of action – including more than 40 pots worth over $100K – for Dwan to clean up on.

Apparently these guys are going to be playing again soon this week, and I hope it stays this exciting. Who knew it would take so long to play this many hands?

I’ll keep you posted if anything cool like this happens again. In equally exciting news, I won $25 last night in a home game against my buddies…impressed?

Roland de Wolfe becomes Second Poker Triple Crown Winner

Posted By : CarbonPoker June 19th, 2009
dewolfe-roland

I see your bet and raise you a ridiculous shirt.

You saw our previous poker news coverage of de Wolfe’s win, but here we’re going to break down who else has a shot at the Poker Triple Crown, and how Roland did it.

There’s no doubt that the triple crown poker group is a very exclusive club.  Until just recently, Gavin Griffin was the only person in poker history to win a WSOP gold bracelet, EPT event, and WPT title.  But English player Roland de Wolfe changed all of this after he won the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo tournament.

The victory wasn’t easy for de Wolfe though since he had to guide through 188 players before landing on one of the toughest final tables of the 2009 WSOP.  Players such as Scott Clements, Antony Lellouche, Alex Kravchenko, and Andy Black were all on this table and looking to take down the gold bracelet.

In the end though, it was de Wolfe and Brett Richey battling heads-up for the win and the largest share of the prize pool at $246,616.  Unfortunately for Richey, he was already at a 4 – 1 chip disadvantage going into the match-up, and it didn’t take long for Roland de Wolfe to make short work of him.

This earned de Wolfe his first ever WSOP gold bracelet which completed the triple crown for him; de Wolfe has also won the WPT Grand Prix De Paris in 2005 and the EPT Dublin Championships in 2006.  With the win, Roland de Wolfe is no doubt in an exclusive club, but there are plenty of other players who have a chance to join this two person group as well.

Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot, Antonio Esfandiari, David Benyamine, Barry Greenstein, Carlos Mortensen, and Daniel Negreanu are some of the players who have WPT and WSOP titles; they only need an EPT title to complete the triple crown.  Bernard “ElkY” Grospellier has won both WPT and EPT titles, and only needs a WSOP bracelet to have earned victories at all 3 levels.  Rob Hollink and Jason Mercier have won both EPT and WSOP events; they simply need a WPT victory to win the triple crown.
