Exclusive Clonie Gowen Interview at CarbonPoker

Posted By : CarbonPoker May 29th, 2009

CarbonPoker had the chance to sit down with a well known, and controversial face in poker – Clonie Gowen.

On Thursday night we had the opportunity to pick her brain on the 2009 WSOP, her dream matchups at the final tables, her future and some golden jewelry.

Let’s get into it:

CarbonPoker: Thanks for sitting down with us, we know it’s a busy month.

Clonie Gowen: Any time, guys.

CP: Now that the WSOP is finally here, what events are you going to be playing in?

Clonie: I don’t have a plan. If I feel like playing, I will play that day. I will mostly focus on cash and play about 15 events.

CP: Do you have any favorite players to play against? Is there a dream matchup for a final table?

Clonie: Obviously me! Kristy Gazes, Robert Williamson, Michael Binger, Lee Markholt, David Williams, Antonio Estanfadari. MANY more. Way too many to name them all.

CP: Lots of friends – is there a place for friendship at the table?

Clonie: It is a game. So when you’re playing with friends, they understand the game. So yes, you can have friends – you just want to take their money. That’s all. If we were playing basketball, I would want to get the ball and score. It’s the same with poker.

CP: Very diplomatic answer. I see you’ve done this before.

Clonie: Once or twice. ☺

CP: Do you still find much time to play poker online?

Clonie: LOL. Not anymore…

CP: After all of this controversy, what’s next for Clonie Gowen in the poker world?

Clonie: Who knows? It isn’t over yet. I am just trying to stay focused and move forward in life.

CP: Everybody knows that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but is this the year for a gold bracelet?

Clonie: My goal is to do the best I can every time I sit down at the table. If I win a bracelet, that is just icing on the cake. But it isn’t the bracelet that’s important to me. I don’t need a trophy to know my ability at the poker table. Having my bank account fat – that’s worth a lot more than a bracelet.

CP: Good luck in Vegas.

Clonie: Thanks! And good luck to you all at CarbonPoker.

Great Value Betting Strategy

Posted By : CarbonPoker May 28th, 2009

Of all the different strategies you can employ in poker, value betting is one concept that isn’t as clearly defined as the rest. However, defining value betting isn’t as difficult as it seems since it is merely a situation where you’ve probably got the best hand and want to bet in hopes of getting an opponent to call. If an opponent calls you’ll be getting the maximum value out of the hand, but pulling off a value bet isn’t such an easy thing to do.

The first element of making a successful value bet is determining how strong your opponent’s hand is. If their hand is too weak, they are likely to fold to a big bet by you while a great hand will beat you and render a value bet useless. The ideal situation is for your opponent to be holding a hand that is somewhere in between the two extremes so they are likely to call, and still lose the hand. It’s your job to read the opponent well enough to know if they’re in this range.

That brings us to the next part of value betting which is determining what type of table image your opponent has. Obviously you’ll need to be observing all of your opponents throughout the game to determine how they play. But break down their betting patterns throughout each hand as well so you can narrow down what kind of hand they’re holding, and can figure out if a value bet is appropriate.

The last thing to keep in mind before making a value bet is to look at your own play, and then decide what image you’ve given off to your opponents. Have you bluffed frequently during the game or have you played very tight the whole time? If you’ve been bluffing then you’ll probably want to make a big bet to get the maximum value out of an opponent while a much smaller bet should be in order if you’re coming across as a tight player.

Once you’ve figured out your opponent’s image, your own image, and the opponent’s hand then you’re well on the path to making an excellent value bet.

Former State Trooper Guilty, Sentenced in Poker Robbery

Posted By : CarbonPoker May 28th, 2009

It’s that old standard poker story:

  • Delaware state trooper plays in high stakes poker game
  • Three masked gunmen enter the room
  • Said trooper assists in “1st-degree robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony”
  • Idiots get busted, plead guilty
  • Six years in jail for everyone!

This is pretty wild west for the great state of Delaware. If anything, this is good for their street cred.

The incident took place at the Wild Quail Country Club in February of last year. HyunJin Kim (the former trooper) says he’s sorry. So there’s that. Sentencing was carried out yesterday. So for the next six years, Kim will be playing for cigarettes and pretending he wasn’t a cop before landing in jail.

Lesson learned: watch your back in Delaware and lock the door while playing for high stakes. It must be a lot safer to play online… obviously.

CarbonPoker WSOP Player Profile: Froliche

Posted By : CarbonPoker May 28th, 2009

With the 2009 World Series of Poker only a few days away, it’s time to take a look at some of CarbonPoker’s finest that are going to be repping the Black and Grey in Vegas.

Froliche, a Carbon regular, is going to be in the $1K No Limit Hold’em event on Saturday, May 30. This is a four-day event that brings out some of the best minds in poker. Froliche punched his ticket in one of the satellite tourneys at Carbon recently.

As a 22 year old, froliche splits his time between playing poker online and occasionally going to college. I think we all know what he’s better at.

I got the chance to sit down and chat with the man and here are some of the words of wisdom that helped earn him the WSOP seat:

On tips/strategy:

“play loose and use reads off your opponents to make key bluffs. [you have] gotta play loose aggressive so that you’re not so dependent on your cards. That’s something I only learned recently and it’s improved my game a lot.”

On comfort during long online poker sessions at Carbon:

“You should always talcum powder your n*ts to keep them from getting uncomfortable while you play”

Sage words from a great player. Follow froliche’s progress at the CarbonPoker Blog and feel free to cheer him on in the comments and use his Talcum powder advice.

Beginning Omaha High-Low Strategy

Posted By : CarbonPoker May 28th, 2009

With the overpopulation of Texas Hold’em on both the Internet and online, more and more players are turning to the game of Omaha High-Low. Even though the Omaha High-Low crowd has been growing for a few years now, it’s still a game that is relatively wide open. Seeing as how this is the case, there’s definitely some money to be made with the game, and it’s always a good idea for serious poker players to go where the money is.

But before you jump into Omaha High-Low, you’ll definitely need to know some basic strategy so you can hang with the competition. And the first thing you need to know with Omaha High-Low is that someone almost always has a nut hand. Since you’re given four hole cards, and can use two of them to make your hand, the hands are always much better on the average in High-Low. So don’t go expecting to win every time you have a set or straight because even these hands are vulnerable in Omaha High-Low.

Another thing to be mindful of with Omaha High-Low is that you should always try to go for the scoop whenever possible. Many beginners get caught up in trying to play low hands all of the time, and simply get one half of the pot. And this is certainly fine when the only option you have is a nut low draw. However, the key is to go for the entire pot with something that is capable of doing so. If you’ve got a speculative hand, suited connectors, pairs, or an ace with a suited card then you’re likely to get a draw that can help you take the entire pot.

One more piece of strategy that you should take into Omaha High-Low is that limping is much more acceptable in this game. We’re always told that limping is a bad idea in Texas Hold’em, but it’s alright in High-Low because you can’t be too attached to your hole cards here. There is so much that can change from pre-flop to the river that you’ll want to see as many cheap flops as possible.

There is lots of other strategy you’ll need to know for Omaha High-Low, but these three things should get you by in the beginning.
