March Madness

Posted By : CarbonPoker February 26th, 2009

March Madness is back again though unfortunately unlike Die Hard its not with a vengeance only more free cash!

As you play real money poker, you earn Comp Points which have a variety of uses, and we’re now adding even more value to Comp Points to help you win free cash as you play. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we’ve gone Irish and added pots of gold for every player to win!

In your player admin section, a customized rainbow will track your Comp Point earnings throughout March, and pay out a pot of gold with each increment achieved. Each color on the rainbow will have a Comp Point goal, and as you work towards that level, the colours on the rainbow will fill up. Every time you fill up one of the colors, the corresponding pot of gold will light up, and you are a winner! The more Points you earn, the more you will win.

You can receive up to $2,000 free cash in total during March Madness by winning all pots of gold on the rainbow. The payouts increase as you earn more, so go on a roll to reach the top prize of $1000 free cash!

Comp Points are automatically earned as you play real money games, so you can simply continue to play your favorite ring games or tournaments and work towards free cash at the same time! Look out for the rainbow Comp Point counter in your player admin, and create your own free cash goal for March!

Posted By : CarbonPoker February 20th, 2009

Ive been getting in to poker movies latley, and thought Id share some of them with you.

No 5 – Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Although poker plays a very small part in this flick, all the brutal action is set in motion by a brutal fixed card game.
No 4 – Maverick.
Mel Gibsons foray into the card game, before he got all weird and started his own church.
No 3 – Rounders
Classic poker movie with a solid cast. “if in the first hour at the table, you cant spot the sucker, then its you…”
No 2 – California Split
What do you have to say? This man just called you a cheater.”
“What do I have to say? I say the man doesn’t know how to play poker. The man is bad. He’s a complete asshole. We all know that, right? The man goes broke, he can’t handle it. The man is on tilt. You wanna hear any more?”
No 1 – The Cincinnati Kid
Steve Mcqueen doing what he does best – laying beat downs on king pins and slaying down babes. “How the hell did you know I didn’t have the King or the Ace?”

“I recollect a young man putting the same question to Eddie the Dude. ‘Son,’ Eddie told him, ‘all you paid was the looking price. Lessons are extra.’”

CarbonPoker World Record Bad Beat Jackpot Pays Out!

Posted By : CarbonPoker February 14th, 2009
$1,192,560.60 Bad beat jackpot pays out $417, 396 to New Yorker

Six others also Share Record Jackpot!

February 13th, 2009 – One lucky player on the Merge Gaming Poker network from New York has just broken the world record for a bad beat jackpot proving Friday 13th is not so unlucky for some. The lucky player scooped $417,396 with the total Jackpot hitting a staggering $1.2m. The jackpot has already been reseeded and currently stands at $240,000.

Player RUGGIO scooped the World record prize by being beaten on the lowest stake jackpot table where blinds start at $0.50/$1. He held a straight flush from 7 to Jack of hearts. He was “beaten” by AELANI who was holding the Queen and King of Hearts giving him a higher Straight Flush. AELANI still took down $208,698 for his part. All the other five players on the table received $41,739 for just being there.

Ruggio holding 8,7 of hearts saw the flop come 3d, 9h Jh, sensing he needed any heart for a flush & the 10h for a straight flush he called AELANI’s $4 bet. The turn card fell a Queen of clubs, AELANI bet out $8, which was swiftly called. The river fell 10 hearts giving RUGGIO the straight flush, at this point he is thinking about how he has AELANI beat. AELANI bets out $20, which RUGGIO raised to $35, AELANI then re-raises all in which was called. To RUGGIO’s horror AELANI turned over Queen and King of hearts giving him a higher straight flush. His horror soon to turned to joy when he realized he had scooped $417,396 and the chips began raining down on his screen.

“My first reaction when I saw that I hit a piece of the Jackpot was ‘oh my God’, I am paying for college completely on my own through student loans so first and foremost I thought about how I would be able to pay off all my student loans and start my life in the real world debt-free.” AELANI, from Northwestern University, Chicago said of his win.

“Congratulations to all players who made this a part of history and share in the jackpot of almost $1,200,000, however, the fun is not over, the bad beat has been reseeded and is already sitting at $240,000.” commented Jay Manning, a Carbon spokesman. “We are thrilled that the Bad Beat has gone off and we have set a new bar for the industry. We never envisaged the Bad beat would take so long to hit, after all we have the lowest qualifying hand anywhere online”, said Manning.

The Bad Beat Jackpot, first introduced by Carbon Poker in mid 2008, this is the first pay out since its introduction, is seeded by $0.50 from every pot on all listed Bad Beat tables and pays out when a hand of quad 7’s or better is busted. Currently, this is the lowest qualifying hand for a bad beat in the online industry.

The Bad Beat Jackpot isn’t the only thing happening at Carbon Poker, with the highly anticipated 4.5 version of their gaming platform to be launched 1st March. The new software, which features an advanced mini mode and table customizer also coincides with the release of the new VIP program that will incorporate a brand new online store. “It’s a very exciting time at Carbon Poker, a lot is happening, the players love it and they are tuning in to what we are doing.” stated Manning.

A Scene From A Movie

Posted By : CarbonPoker February 5th, 2009

“The Judges game, I heard about it for years on the street even before I was in law school. A rotating group of 10 or 12 judges, prosecutors and professors, they all have money and in my playing days it would have been pretty sweet to have any one of them oweing me favors.

Only problem is no one can get in the game anymore. One rounder Chris Belentta sat under some pretense but after they found out he was a pro he couldn’t cross the street anymore with out some sort of legal hassle. Even his regular club – Four Shades got shut down. It had been open since 1907…

“Oh michael, you got some things for me? just put them on the desk over there.”

“..He paying you for this late night s#%$ kid?”

“Knowledge is my reward sir,” Michael responds with a smile.

“haha, Well it aint worth it. Why don’t you become a jockey – do something useful. haha?”

“Kids a little tall isnt he Dean?”

“Enough with the Belmont recruiting spiel, your bet.”

“Michael is lead council in the court your presiding over next week, besides he could use the background if his gonna clerk for one of you fellas next summer,” Abe mentions casually.

“Abe, i thought you liked the kid, why you wanna make him a civil servant?” retorts the Dean.

“A word to the wise kid, stay in private sector.”

The amazing thing is that in the collection of all this great legal minds, there inst one poker player here.well

Call, Call, “Raise – Professor raises,” Interjects Michael.

Not sure if Im gonna bring my legal career to a crashing halt before it even starts, but I just cant help myself.

Check, check, “Check to Martin and Louis over there.” “Check to the raiser.”

“Whats the limit?” Michael starts

“Big bets $20. $20.”

“Bet $20.”

“You’ve seen half the hand! How the f#$% are you betting into us? are you sure this is wise Abe? its your money the kids betting with.” Comments the Judge

“Its plenty wise, we know what we’re holding and we know what your holding,” Retorts Michael.

“The f@#! you know what we all got!”

“Summer clerkship in your office says I know what your holding?”

“I don’t bet with jobs like that but lets just say ill put you at the top of the list if your right.”

“..Ok. Well you were looking for that third 3 but your forgetting the professor folded it on 4th street and now your representing that you have it. The DA made his two pair but he knows their no good. Judge Kapan was trying to squeeze out a diamond flush but he came up short and Mr Isen is futilely hoping his queens are gonna hold up. so like i said, the bet’s $20.”

Who knows what this is from? Probably the best poker movie made…

For all the people who claim bad beats…

Posted By : CarbonPoker February 3rd, 2009

I was trawling the player forums earlier and came across an interesting discussion about online sites being rigged and bad beats etc. Apart from such claims being slightly moronic (we are regulated), one user posted this, its a quote from one Roy Rounder.

There are two types of bad beats:

BAD BEAT #1…

When you catch a monster hand but lose to a BIGGER
monster hand.

For example, let’s say you’re holding pocket Aces
and the flop hits A-6-6. That means you’ve got a
full house.

Your opponent goes ALL-IN… and you call. You
think your Aces are the best hand but they’re NOT,
because your opponent has pocket sixes, which
gives him the four-of-a-kind.

BAD BEAT #2…

When YOU have the best hand and your opponent has
the WORST hand but your opponent GETS LUCKY and
wins the pot.

For example, let’s say you have pocket Aces and go
all-in. Your opponent calls with pocket three’s.

The flop hits 2-4-5 and the turn card is a 6,
giving your opponent the STRAIGHT and causing you
to lose the hand.

Now that’s a bad beat.

And let’s face it, the SECOND type of bad beat–
the one where your opponent gets totally LUCKY and
outdraws you– is the kind of beat that just plain
SUCKS. And ****es you off.

In fact, the second type of bad beat is the kind
you REMEMBER the most too. When someone says, “Hey
man, how did your card game go?”, the first thing
that will come out of your mouth will be the story
of that bad beat.

Am I right?

Now here’s what’s interesting…

MORE BAD BEATS HAPPEN IN ONLINE POKER THAN IN
“REGULAR” OFFLINE POKER.

Literally, you’ll see more bad beats happen in an
online poker game than you’ll see at a local cash
game or in a casino.

If you play both online and offline poker, I’m
sure you agree with this statement.

So what’s going on here? Why would it be this way?

There are two popular “theories”…

1. Online poker is rigged.

2. There are more hands per hour, therefore it’s
an ILLUSION that there are more bad beats.

My opinion is that BOTH of these theories are
WRONG.

Here’s why:

First off, I genuinely believe online poker is NOT
rigged. I mean, c’mon… Do you REALLY think these
multi-billion dollar casinos would need to RIG
hands?

They make their money from tournament entry fees
and rakes… and trust me, they’re making plenty.

OK, so what about the second theory?

Well, I do agree that there are more hands per
hour in online poker than offline poker. There’s
no disputing that.

But I don’t think that’s a good enough reason…

Because my belief is that there are MORE bad beats
that happen per X number of hands ONLINE than for
offline poker.

For instance, let’s say you played 100 hands. And
let’s say you caught two really bad beats for
every 100 hands at a casino. That’s 2%.

In online poker, you’re likely to catch FIVE or
even TEN of those really bad beats per 100 hands.
That’s 5-10%.

So the fact that you’re seeing MORE hands doesn’t
explain the HIGHER PERCENTAGE of bad beats.

Still with me?

OK, so now let me give you MY “theory” about this.

It’s not really a theory. Just good old simple
logic, actually.

Here it goes:

The reason there are more bad beats in ONLINE
poker is because the very NATURE of online poker
leads people to PLAY DIFFERENTLY.

The CARDS and ODDS are the same.

It’s the PLAYERS that aren’t the same.

What I mean is that for online poker, a LARGE
portion of players adopt the style of
LOOSE-AGGRESSIVE.

Translation? Manic.

They act irrationally… play hands they shouldn’t
play… and bet way too aggressively for most
given situations.

Why?

Because online poker isn’t as “real”.

The money isn’t as real. I mean, heck… the
casinos give you so much “free” money when you
sign up, how COULD it feel real?

The cards aren’t real. The chips aren’t real. The
table isn’t real. NONE OF THAT STUFF EVEN EXISTS.

All you see when you play online poker are some
silly little animations. And you hear some
clickity-click” sounds of fake chips.

That’s it.

Nothing else.

Period.

And if you LOSE a game, all you have to do is make
three or four mouse clicks and you’re INSTANTLY
playing another game.

And hell, you can PLAY ten games at once if you
want!

You can literally play poker against 100 players
AT THE SAME TIME!

It’s a different world, my friend.

Now… let’s get back to the bad beats.

The FACT that players are LOOSE-AGGRESSIVE is what
leads to the SITUATIONS where bad beats happen.

Here’s why:

1. Players bet their draws more or call large bets
with draws or OK hands (i.e. bottom pair).

2. More players are involved in every pot.

3. The pots are bigger, since players are more
aggressive.

When these conditions COMBINE TOGETHER, it creates
an environment where there are a lot of BIG POTS
and bad beats.

It’s not that the cards are “rigged”.

It’s that the betting patterns and playing styles
are DIFFERENT than what you’re used to.

And when you combine that with the fact that you
see more hands per hour, it inevitably leads to
seeing a lot more “crazy” hands and bad beats than
in regular poker.
