Forum Story Winners

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 30th, 2008

During the past week another contest exclusive to the forum was held. $25 on offer, and all you had to do was tell the most interesting poker story. Thankfully I have two winners. Thank you to all who posted stories. The winning entries…

From Chipraker420
Was playing the $300 GTD a few years back and was down to heads up. Both of us had pretty even stacks and blinds were big. Get dealt AK in the BB and other guy raised big so I called. Flop comes Q K 4. Other guy bets big, I raise, he moves all in so I call. He had me covered by a few thousand and flips over QQ. I swore and went to grab a something to smoke to ease my pain. I look down to grab it and when I look up I see that I’ve caught runner runner J 10. WOOHOO!!! I got so excited, I jumped outta my seat and ended up knocking over my smoking device and shattering it. This caused dirty water to spill onto and short out my keyboard as well as spill all over the carpet. DAMN IT!! Old lady was not happy.

Game winnings – $90

New Smoking utensil – $130
New Keyboard – $40
Carpet cleaner – $6

Net loss – $86

Finally being on the right end of a miracle suckout – Priceless

And the other winning story submitted. Thanks to FLOPZILLA

Another Live Seat Winner!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 27th, 2008

Only days after the CarbonPoker Team’s last live seat outing we are already gearing up for the next and the first step in the process – putting together a team. The first of our lucky players to make the grade – punainen16.

punainen16 was the winner of the recent APPT Live Seat Final. Lasting just under four and a half hours of play punainen16 pulled through to pick up the only seat on offer. Despite their only being one seat up for grabs, second, third and fourth places shared in just over $8,100 in cash. Had there been one more player in the tournament and there would have been two lucky players on their way to Sydney!

punainen16 busted second place catalinu23 with J7 against catalinu’s Q8. Picking up a J in the middle of the flop, punainen16 had it in the basket when catalinu’s outs didnt come on the turn or river. Congratulations punainen16. Dont forget you can also pick up a seat through the MTT leaderboard promotion! So get playing!

If our recent Poker News Cup experience is anything to go by your in for one hell of a time, not only in the main event, but for the whole journey as you see and experience Sydney! Enjoy!

A Note from a player

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 26th, 2008

A kind word from one of our players who was at the Poker News Cup with us. Thought I would share with you…

HATS OFF TO JASON, LIAM, SHANE & ANTHONY !!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT HOSPITALITY !!!!!
They were sure to see that we had “No Worries ” in the land down under.
It was quite an event being in Melbourne,as I was there to support 2fast443allin during his play at the Poker News Cup Tournament.
Carbon Poker should be very proud of them. They even assisted a couple we introduced to them who were not affiliated with site . I have been to a lot of places and never have been treated so well. They didn’t make it about “It’s our Job ” they were truly friends and made sure that all had a great time.We had a fantastic dinner together, and the fun continued from there late into the evening.
We were a bit sad to leave as we will miss their company, but we will cherish the great times and memories made while there.I sure we converted some players from other sites as well, because they saw how Carbon Poker took care of all of us during the entire trip and not just while they were playing cards.

Thank you very much Ladybug02.

Poker News Cup Final Event and Wrap Up

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 21st, 2008

So the final table of the Poker News Cup was set and the event was fast drawing to a close. The table was full of familiar faces for the Carbon Poker Team as we had all sat at tables with those still in.

They lay out of the final table looked as such;

Seat 1: Tim Heath – 566,000
Seat 2: David Gorr – 1,616,000
Seat 3: James Broom – 551,000
Seat 4: DavidLee – 503,00
Seat 5: Nali Kaselias – 1,530,000
Seat 6: Grant Levy – 574,000
Seat 7: Kenneth Damm – 384,000
Seat 8: Martin Comer – 1,333,000
Seat 9: Ray Sukkar – 1,152,000

Broom, Levy and then Gorr were all eliminated in quick order despite sizable starting stacks. Soon to follow was Tim Heath was busted holding a straight by Sukklar’s nut straight draw and Martin Comer who took out fifth. Sukkar was next, followed by Lee who picked up $73,000 for third.

There was a lengthy heads up battle between chip monsters Kenneth Damm and Nali Kaselias before it came to an abrupt conclusion with AJ vs K9. Kaselias holding AJ raised preflop to be called all in over the top by Damm. With out hesitation the call was made and Kenneth Damm was out on second place. Well done Kaselias who picked up the trophy and the $250,000.

All Carbon Players were tired after the poker efforts but keen to celebrate. We all had a blast in Melbourne, each taking home memories we wont soon forget.

Carbon Poker In the Money

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 19th, 2008

After an torturous 18 hours of play dperfeitoC has busted out. Though its not a sad thing. He also picked up a tad over 7000 in cash. After playing flawlessly through out the second day he built his small stack into one that was very competitive.

Through out the tournament he played at some very tough tables including going against Lee Nelson and The Croc. Finally succumbing to the pressure of play his stack took the toll and wore down. Short stacked with 30,000 odd chips and up against stacks of an average 200,000 he moved all in with 26 of spades. Called by a hand with two picture cards his luck finally ran out and he busted in 21st position. Well done dperfeitoC, enjoy your cash and I hope you’ve had an amazing trip.
Pics comming soon.

The End of Main Event Day 1

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 19th, 2008
I talk strategy with Gunnner7 while we count down the minutes to the resume of play. With a bit of his advice I come up with the following…
All in on AK, KQ, AJ and JJ or better. Its a little lose, but If i bleed down to 4000 in chips im pretty much gone. Thats two double ups compared to one I would have to make now.
Back at the table now and cards are being flicked my way. Gunnner tells the table a story about a player earlier in the day…or maybe it was yesterday (once again the mind blanks), that ended up with a card flicked under his fingernail. This dealer’s like a cannon so my hands get the hell out of dodge. Cards come but nothing good. A few hands in and I have a decent hand AQ. All in. A call. Here we go again…
An Ace on the flop and nothing for his hand.
Im back in and up to 12000 chips now. Still drastically short stacked, but up from where I was. Vos has taken a beating in chips in the past few hands, though he isn’t overly interested in being there. He says so and turns back to watching some TV show on his Iphone. A hand latter he is almost level with me in chips, turns to me and says I have a feeling this next hand your either going to double me up or Im going to double you up. Maybe I say. Cards flick out like a fanning machine gun. I look down AA.
‘This hand you say’ I ask Vos.
‘I dunno, Lets see’ He comments as he raises.
ahhh…i dunno..ahh screw it lets play’ I falter before pushing all in. He quickly calls.
AA v A10.
He is left with around 1200 in chips left and im back up to 22000. I dont get the honour of taking him out completely, but I do get the satisfaction of doing all the work. Though how on earth did he know it would be next hand? odd.
The remaining 90 minutes of the days play passes in a blur. I cant remember any hands I played, other than seeing a flop for free in the BB position with A5. Two pair from the flop, so I slow play. Two 4000 chip bets and I call. Another crap card and a further bet of the same size and a fold. I reraise and he calls, the show down comes quick and I hear congratulations from those around me on a nice hand. Oh and a huge pot.
I end the day with 52000 in chips. A few thousand above average. The Carbon team ends the day with the following…
Jason – 52000
2fast443allin – 34000
Gunnner7 – 36000
dperfeitoC – 33000
*Approx values
Akahdas has unfortunately busted out.
Tomorrow we resume play but for now we all head to the bar and relieve the days stresses and talk about our adventures.

Rookie Blasts Main Event Day 1.

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 19th, 2008

Dear readers, I regret to inform you that my run in the main event of the poker news cup has come to an end. The fat lady has sung. The Violin quartet is now playing. Liam has been gracious enough to take care of my blogging duties while Ive been living the poker pro life but now Im back, and have quite a story to tell…

[Image - Vos on left, Me in green, and Gunnner7 looks on wearing his Carbon Poker hat. Vos has raised 2500, I have reraised 5000]

The first place to begin seems the most prominent thought on my mind right now – @*(#^&(*$^!!!!!!~ why did I make that call! I can honestly say I made the wrong decision for the first time in the last few days of play. But more on that later…

Day 1, Flight 2. Sitting down at the felt with 239 fellow players I was to be frank a bit of a nervous wreck for the first several sessions. As I stated in my previous post on the satellite event, it was only my second live tournament and I was more than a little intimidated by all those with reping Polaroid sunnies, ear phones and grim looks of determination. After 10 hours of play yesterday my memory fails me for specifics but here’s the basics of the first few sessions.

My cards sucked. Big time. After loosing a few small pots early on and on substantial hand where I bet 3000 after the flop and again on the river only to have my KJ busted with AJ on a J high board. So im now down to around 12000 in chips. When the starting stack is 20,000 and everyone else at my table is sitting nicely. Things aren’t looking so good. For the next few hours my strategy is to play tight. Very tight, and pounce when the cards come. However I fold and fold and wait and wait, but still they dont come. Break time – 15 minutes to grab a snack, hit the toilet and compose myself for the next session. The satellite was child’s play compared to this. The next session arrives all to quickly and i resume my tight play. Once again the cards don’t come. I play one hand in the first hour and pick up a small pot, a few big blinds worth – almost a 2000 in chips. But after an hour of play constantly folding the big blind to raises, Im still sitting down from where I started. The seconds count down, the clock ticks over, ” NEXT HAND BLINDS ARE UP” the Pit Boss calls over the PA. Like the last, this hour brings no luck and no cards. This playing poker thing is really over rated. Its one thing to go out with guns blazing, but to be blinded to the felt cause of bad cards is just torture.

My hand selection strategy – I feel that my claim of bad cards needs a bit of explaining. After all im quite conscious of those players who complain of getting bad cars like whiny loser. Two considerations in my strategy; this is a tournament, I dont have to win the tournament, just make the money. I just have to last as long as possible. So naturally a tight strategy is in order nothing under A10 suited to call a raise. Picture pockets and any two royal suited cards are raises, anything less – J10, A10, Q10, suited are all calls, and A9,8, and similar are tentative calls depending on position. Now my bad cards are – 2,4 8 times in the hour. yes I kept count just for this. half a dozen 3/6 and 3/8, 72 a handful of times and nothing with two picture cards, a fair few k7, A3 and similar, but nothing to call the raises that were made almost every hand. So forgive me for sounding like a whiny loser, but I did have bad cards. So what do I do…the only thing I can – get bored and crack out the tunes.

Break time. 15 mins till I go back to blinding away. A snack to eat from one of the dozen or so over priced Indian eateries in this place (really theres like 5 Indian places in a row here!) and its time to return to the tables. Maybe I should perform some ritual to increase my luck or pray to who ever is it I believe in, though I dont think its gonna make a difference. First few hands in and my luck hasn’t changed. Honestly, this is depressing. Next hand AA. WOOOOOOHOOOOOO! Finally my luck has come. I forget the specifics of the hand but I win some chips. A decent amount and im now sitting back above 10,000 after having dipped dangerously low to 7500. Next hand comes and I sneak a look at QJ…its like Christmas but without any of that Christmas cheer and no big fat guy in a red jumpsuit. Another win, not as big this time, just a few stolen blinds with a raise from late position.

Next hand, and Ive caught another break. Not as good as last, J10, but still decent. A call of the blind, and a reraise. I think ill sit this one out and not tempt fate. Its a good thing too…

On my right side theres a big reraise. Im sitting on the button and the SB makes the call. The flop comes 9910. The right side bets big and hard. The SB makes the call. Next card – 7. No flush options. Right side again with the raise and SB again with the call. The pot is quite big now, SB has a mountain of chips and the other guy is sitting rather plump as well. The river – a 3. Im sure it doesn’t help. The right side moves all in after deliberating for a long while the SB makes the call. He shows 810 off suit. A pair of 10s and the 9’s on the board. It looks strong but what do looks really account for when they are up against AA. The table goes kinda wild. Not with a party like atmosphere that I had secretly been hoping for; these players are seriously uptight. But with table talk and confusion. The topic…who on earth calls such massive raises, particularly preflop with 108 off suit. The dealer calls for calm and play resumes.

I pick up QQ and KK and JJ in very short succession of each other. I move all in once, unfortunately for me the call is not made and the hand is laid down. I needed the call as I was 100% I had the best hand. KK on a board of J ,crap, crap, semi crap and really crap was pretty good. Either way my chips are back up now to over the starting stack.

A few hands pass and the field is now down to around 190. The earlier caller – the one with 810 who got busted big, lets call him Mr Red. Please excuse my lack of descriptors but I didnt like the attitude this guy had and wasnt he was definitely not on my make friends with list. So anyways, the point was that Mr Red is now firmly on tilt. Not just your average tilt too. But a raging ridiculous tilt. If you picture a tilt as big as the tsunami that rocked Asia in 06 then your getting close. Early on he was looking like an extremely dangerous player, now like a chip factory. Either way I don’t get the chance to cash in on the action as he is busted in short order. A few players have left the table, all of them far better players than I consider myself, so im not doing too bad.

Later on in the evening – around just after returning from dinner break Mr Blue is busted from the table, (I smile, I didnt really like him either), and Mr Vos is sat down. Everyone at the table nods in welcome, their hearts gripped in cold fear! A few players from the table know the man, as they obviously spend far to much time bleeding chips to him at these tables. Either way play is resumed on and several hands later we have some action.

Liam has already given you an account of this from his point of view. So I wont bore you with details, needless to say I can now claim I played against the best and won. Go me.

This brings me to the next point I learned through this experience – the value of table image. Vos naturally as a recognised pro has a good table image, people were wary of him, and played cautiously. As a result he probably picked some pots that I would not have won in his position with the same cards and same motions of play.

By now my drinking buddy – Gunnner7 had joined the table with a nice stack. It made for a much more enjoyable experience, as we could chat freely and knew we both had a friend at the table. A note on Gunnner, he travelled over 40 hours to be here, including a nice little 24hour delay at LAX after his plane lost a wing. Crazy right. A whole friggin wing! So his kind sir father managed to race him through the city and get him here with only a few minutes to spare.

Theres about 20 minutes until the next break and its the final one of the night. Im still sitting below average chipstack, but well in it with 30,000 odd piled in different colours in front of me. Cards are flicked out by the dealer with clinical precision. I hold my stylish Carbon Poker card guard so he can fire them right in and have it fall on top. He sinks them in perfectly and I stiffle a laugh in appreciation of his skill. I peer down at…K….K. Look up, check the button positon – Im mid position. I make the call when the action is folded to me. A substantial raise 4X the big blind. I dont recall chip amounts for bets, its not how I think. For me its always the increment of the big blind. Though once again thats besides the point. Theres one caller, though its not a call, its an all in. I check his chip stack Ive got him covered with a bit to spare. Not much, but a bit. I deliberate by shuffling my cards around. Screw it, I call.

AK vs KK.

Im ahead. At this point. Though the odds are not far off even.
The flop…
Nothing.
Nothing.
Ace.
Dammit! its now AA vs KK
My outs dont come and Im down to 6000 or so in chips.

The break comes and Gunnner and I head for the bar after checking in on old mate 2fast443allin. His still well in it with a decent stack.

Thats all for now. The story continues tomorrow with the rest of day 1 and day 2’s adventures.
Note: Vos is actually a very nice gentleman and was far more enjoyable to play against than 90% of the players I met at the main event. Though it was satisfying beating him.

Updates Cont.

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 18th, 2008

Again with the bad news…

2fast443allin, who has been an absolute pleasure to sink beers with after a days play has also been busted. Having a shortstack and sitting in the small blind position 2fast443 is up against it. The play folds round to him where a peek at the hole cards and…viola! JJ. Not bad, but definitely playable. Its tough when all the play has been massive reraises and having to lay down a lot of average hands like A10 suited. Anyways.
2fast raises big, the BB position pushes over the top (why am I getting a faint sense of deja vu at writing this???) all in and 2fast makes the call.
JJ vs KK. Uh oh…..
The board is dealt and its no help. Both players (Gunnner7 and 2fast443allin) have both come from half way round the world to be here (Canada and the US respectively) and despite having their luck run out have both told me they have had a blast of a trip and an amazing experience.  That and they are now both converts for the local beers. Drink up guys, your tournament maybe over but, but you still have another day. Enjoy this city…

Main Event Update Day 2

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 18th, 2008

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but unfortunately I must. Things are not faring as well on day two for our Carbon Poker Team. As Im back writing this, rather than my fill in – Liam or piggy as his more commonly known. I have busted out, but never mind It came in a  blaze of glory. Deatils on that a bit later.

The latest updates from the floor is that Gunnner7 has busted out after picking up a decent stack earlier on in the day. The hand…
Sitting in small blind, the action leads around with the whole table folding, a glance and QQ and a raise is in order. 12,000 in chips splash out against the felt. That’s 3x the big blind which are sitting at 1500/3000.  Mr Big Blind makes the call and the flop comes 9J4 rainbow, which is rather nice for Gunnner. A 15,000 bet is made and an over the top all in is made by the big blind position. Gunnner checks his options for a second before also making the call. Cards are flipped to reveal 89 off suit. This looks like its going to be easy. However the turn comes a 10 and now his up against an inside straight draw….
The river…a 7. Mr Big Blind has picked up a straight draw and Gunnner is sent packing. Though he can take some consolation in the free beer Liam has waiting for him and that he has played the hand perfectly. Sometimes luck just wins out. Unlucky Gunnner, Ill be joining you shortly for another beer.
Who plays with 89 offsuit!!!

Carbon Team To Tackle Day 2

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 18th, 2008

The first day of play has completed and I’m proud to say that the Carbon Team has done extremely well with only 2 of our 8 members unable to survive through to Day 2. The good news is that fortune is waiting for six Carbon players who find themselves in the remaining 123 entrants of the originally 410 strong field.

However, today will possibly prove to be the toughest battle with the action tightening, the blinds increase and the shear fact that play will continue until only the final table remain. Now, if I get to see our super six seat at the final table, I’ll be as happy as a pig in mud!

Carbon Player Summary:
Pizzapazzasmile: Busted Level 7 Day 1
- Final Hand: Kd Qd vs Ah Js
- Flop: 3d 4d 7h Turn: 9c River: 10c

Akahdas: Busted Level 8 Day 1

Gunnner7: Playing Day 2 – 37,450 Chips

2fast443allin: Playing Day 2 – 34,750 Chips

AFCArt: Playing Day 2 – 19,800 Chips

Tamm345: Playing Day 2 – 24,900 Chips

DperfeitoC: Playing Day 2 – 27,500 Chips

Jason Carbon Blogger: Playing Day 2 – 55,825 Chips

Im looking forward to seeing today’s action get underway, but most importantly can’t wait to watch the battle resume between none other than Carbon’s very own Jason and his most idolized player: Mark Vos.

That’s right, only a day after Jason entertained us with his exclusive scoop about Vos being put in his place, by my now most favourite pitt boss…. He was now sitting to Jason’s right and I could see our boy was just busting to slap the ginger pro around the table.

And as you guessed, Jason wasted absolutely no time getting to work….

The First 3 Hands After Vos Joined Table:
• Hand 1 – Jason limps in
- table folds round to Vos
- Vos raises to 600, Jason Calls
- Flop: 10 Q 4
- Vos bets 1,200, Jason Calls
- Turn: 9
- Vos bets 2,000, Jason calls
- River: 8
- Vos bets 2,000, Jason raises to 5,000 and Vos calls
- Jason shows KJ for the straight over Vos’ two pair: Q9

• Next Hand – Table folds to Dealer: Vos
- Vos raises 2,500
- Jason in small blind re-raises to 5,000
- Big blind folds
- Vos thinks, then folds in disgust
- Jason later tells me he had pocket Kings

• 3rd Hand – Vos small blind, Jason big blind
- Table folds
- Vos raises 3 x big blind
- Jason again re-raises the little ranga
- After a long think and some exchanged glares, Vos folds again

It was at this very point that Jason decided to take a quick breather from the table and walks over to say, “Now that’s how you play F$#%@^& poker!”
Looks like our lil baby blogger is all grown up now and ready to take on anyone.

Keep posted for updates on Day 2!
