Dodging a bullet

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 16th, 2007

All through Floptober I’ve been looking for big hands that get crushed by the monster that is a queen or higher set of quads. Everyone loves drama and what could be better than a full house kings over queens running into quad queens?

I almost found that exact story, but thanks to some tight play the kings were folded preflop. The player in question, toonces222, folded K-6 offsuit in early position, an easy call at that stage. With a K-Q-Q there probably weren’t too many regrets, but when the flop brought another king that probably changed. At that stage in the hand if your holding a king, your are pretty confident you have your guy beat. Anyone betting against you you would probably assume they hold a queen and you have them beat or they hold a king and its a split pot. You don’t expect to get crushed by quads there.

Luckily toonces222 had laid down his king preflop, so the only person losing their money to Gucharo and his quad queens was pargrande and his J-7 offsuit, I won’t comment on that.

Just in case you found this post by mistake and you really need to know how to dodge bullets, try here: How to Dodge Bullets.

Greening your online poker experience.

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 15th, 2007

With today being Blog Action Day (www.blogactionday.org), and with the whole world blogging about how we can improve the world around us, I thought I’d write a few words about what steps you can take to green up your online poker.

Lets face it the biggest demon you are going to face with online poker is power usage. Here are seven tips for 7 days to help reduce the power usage of your online gaming.

1. Switch to a notebook
The average desktop power consumption cruises along at 120 watts, whilst their portable cousins the notebook squeaks by with a lesser 30 watts. With the added benefits of portability it’s a no brainer.

2. Shut down your computer
Many people believe that the extra power used to start your computer means you should leave your computer on. In reality while it does take extra electricity to turn your computer on, this is not more than is used by leaving your computer on for more than 10 minutes. So if your taking a lunch break or stepping away for a while, turn your computer off.

3. Check your settings
Your computers operating system will have built in energy saving settings. Check with your manufacturers guide as to how you can adjust these and further reduce your power usage.

4. Monitor your monitor
Your monitor uses a large portion of your energy, so where possible turn your monitor off. Screen savers are not energy savers, they still use your monitor at its full capacity. So don’t turn on your screen saver, turn off your monitor. You can also turn down your monitors brightness level, the brighter your screen is the more power its using.

5. Get a gadget
There are several gadgets that work at reducing your vampire power usage (standby power). Whilst many of these gadgets can be rather expensive, there is one absolute bargain on the market, the Mini Power Minder. Priced at $14.95 on Amazon, this great little gadget shuts off your computer’s peripherals when the computer itself shuts down. A USB cable lets the device know when the computer is powered down and shuts off power to a secondary outlet. Plugging all of your extras into a power board connected to this second outlet would mean all of your extras stop leaching power while you aren’t on your computer.

6. Go green
Most utility companies now offer a green solution to power, so you can switch from non-renewable energy to renewable energy. If this isn’t enough for you, there is always the option of switching your household to self powered. If you produce more energy than your household uses you can even sell that extra power back to the power grid!

7. Offsets
If you are like me, and you don’t quite have the budget to set up your home as fully solar powered, and your energy provider doesn’t have a green power solution for you, then you can look at carbon offsets. Carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere as a result our intensive use of fossil fuels like oil and coal. By paying to balance (or offset) the your usage, by funding projects that reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide, and therefore lower your environmental footprint.

These are just a few tips from me to you, be sure to do your own research and see what is best for your situation. I will leave you with a little video that was made to help promote Blog Action Day.

Don’t forget to check back with our blog for updates on what we are doing to improve our environmental footprint and on how you can help us fight this global problem.

Double Quad Queens!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 14th, 2007

While I was at the beach working on my sunburn 8erChamp was busy cashing in on Floptober, not once, not twice in two days, but twice in the one day!

We were excited last week when thaDOGfather flopped quads twice in two days to take home a tidy Floptober bonus, but the weekends efforts really take the cake. It was a long session for 8erChamp it was just over 4 hours between his two big hands, but the long hours were rewarded when he had his second pair of pocket queens matured into a lovely set of quad queens on the flop. Im pretty sure that 8erChamp has a new favorite starting hand now, 2 fine ladies!

Here is the list of weekend winners:
8erChamp $4
inafrica $10

Don’t become your nickname

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 9th, 2007

Just when I was thinking I would be writing a blog about playing it safe against raises, because all of todays Floptober winners had taken down their hands without getting much value, I get to the final hand…

The action took place at a $2/$4 table, so we aren’t even talking about a penny game, these are real dollars. Pepeman made it $16 to go with his pocket queens, and got a caller from the small blind, this is where the don’t become your nickname comes from. In the small blind was DONK4LIFE, and on this hand he certainly played just like he advertises with his nickname. DONK4LIFE had pocket 7’s, so the call wasn’t so bad, he could be up against a big drawing hand that misses. Unfortunately for him the flop comes down Q-Q-3, me makes the smart move of checking, and Pepeman with his nutty quads bets out $26. At this point alarm bells should have gone off, and DONK4LIFE should have let his sevens go, but for some reason he called. The turn is a 10 and DONK4LIFE again checks and this time manages to lay it down when Pepeman bets out.

If a preflop raise, and an over pair on the board followed by a big bet doesn’t scream out “YOUR SEVENS ARE NO GOOD!” I just don’t know what does.

I’m willing to call this a rush of blood, I’m guessing DONK4LIFE plays plenty of good poker too, this hand was just a story that needed to be told.

Here are all todays winners:
DrHLecter $25 JoshFurrow $25 KingDE $4 Grik0s $50 MRMEATNY $10 DiplVwRG1 $25 RICHHY $300 pepeman $400

We aren’t even a third of the way through the month yet, so there is still plenty of time for you to flop your big quads and win your own piece of this promo, just play in any cash game and flop a set of quads queens or higher. It’s happening everyday, tomorrow could be your day.

Slow playing monsters

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 8th, 2007

How do you get great value from a huge hand? Act like you have a draw at best like rebel1916 did.

Needing to get his pocket kings to a flop he made a minimum raise and picked up a couple of callers. He hit his quads on the flop and while a lot of players will bet out hard here rebel1916 smartly checked as did his three callers. The turn was a harmless two and he again checked opening up an opportunity for his opponents to make a move. One player did, iceman066, he bet out and everyone else got out of the way leaving rebel1916 and iceman066 to duke it out. Another harmless card on the river and another check from rebel1916 set a beautiful trap, despite having completely missed with nothing but the pair on the board to go along with his J-Q in his hand iceman066 decided that all the checking was a sign of weakness and decided to steal the pot with an all-in bet. Unfortunately for him rebel1916 was holding the absolute nuts and made the easiest call of his life.

That is why you slow play your monsters!

Here are all todays Floptober Fest winners:
Iluvplayinwithfools $200
K1n9K0n9 $2
IncyWincySpider $50
RiverRatKilla $2
xsurveyor $50
tlfields $4
rebel1916 $2
BUHRMANATOR $200
Yacaimei $25

Action!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 7th, 2007

There may not have been as many Floptober winners today, but there sure were more stories to tell. Almost everyone that flopped quad queens or higher today managed to get some action, here are a couple of the hands.

At a 10c/25c table damnflushes woke up with pocket rockets and make it $1 to go, serb123 looked down at K-J and decided to come along for the ride as did rotweiss1 with pocket 3’s. When two aces rained down on the flop guaranteeing damnflushes a nice bonus to go along with his absolute nuts he slyly checked handing the lead over to roweiss1 who walked into the trap and bet out, serb123 got out of the way and damnflushes smooth called. The two combatants went all the way to the river and after the early check from damnflushes it seemed rotweiss just couldn’t believe he was beat, he ended up all-in and was well beaten at the show down by damnflushes quads.

At a 2c/4c table darthknives looks down at pocket queens and raises to 12c, he gets 2 callers with K-J and 8-T respectively. The flop comes down J-Q-Q handing darthknives his quads and the absolute nuts, the other players have a low pair and gutshot straight draw, everyone checks and at this stage darthknives is praying someones hand improves or they decide to make a move. Miraculously jayson10000 (8-T) makes his gutshot draw and now has a nice little queen high straight. When action checks around to him he raises it up another 16c and everyone calls. The river is an ace the trap is well and truly set, darthknives takes the lead and bets out only to be raised by jayson10000, the other player gets out of the way and darthknives moves all-in and is called by jayson10000. I would have loved to have seen jayson10000’s face when darthknives flipped up those quads… I bed that was the last hand he was expecting!

Over at a 25c/50c table play was six handed and four of the players got dealt pocket pairs. The table went 6-6, Q-Q, 8-8, J-6, T-T and A-3 all spades. The snowmen were first to act and called the big blind, J-6 not surprisingly folded but then T-T decided to make a stand and pushed all-in preflop. A-3 got out of the way and Q-Q made the call from the big blind, and the early caller with the snowmen cooled on his hand and laid it down. The flop was the only cards needed, Q-9-Q meant good night for GoirleNLBas and his tens, and CalmerNuR took down a nice pot to go along with his Floptober bonus.

The final hand that caught my attention wasn’t that huge in the money stakes, but it was just a dead set cruel hand. Pocket rockets were in front of intheboro, while realbadhand had a pretty good hand with K-Q all diamonds. Things got real bad on the flop though when intheboro flopped quad aces and realbadhand picked up a diamond flush draw, holding the second highest diamond with the only higher diamond on the board. At that point even with the two aces on the board you have got to be thinking that if you make that flush that you have your guy beat, I mean how many times do you come up against aces? Well for realbadhand this was one of those times, the river delivered his flush, he bet out accordingly and was called down, and had the displeasure of having a great looking diamond flush cracked by quad aces… now thats a cooler.

Here is the winners list for today:
damnflushes $25
darthknives $4
Smettie $10
CalmerNuR $50
MainSuspect $10
huffy1 $25
intheboro $4

Just beware when your at the tables, while you may not expect to run into quads, it just might happen, and if you have a big hand crushed by quads queens or higher, your hand will probably end up here!

Floptober Winners keep on coming!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 6th, 2007

The winners keep coming in Floptober, and there are a few juicier wins out there thanks to players flopping quads at the higher limits.

While there weren’t any crazy hands in this batch there certainly was some crazy chat. When Urban57 woke up with pocket rockets at a 25c/50c he quickly made it $1.50 to go, another player who had already folded made the comment “bluffer” in the chat box, Urban57 was called and soon flopped quad aces, giving him absolute nuts, I’m not sure what some people consider bluffing, but Im pretty sure quad aces should hold up in most spots, its a bit tough to call that a bluff!

Here is the list of winners and what they picked up for playing their big pocket pairs:
RUMONEY $25
sandy1234 $4
Mamoste $4
stuck333 $200
ChemicalAli $100
aaaargh1 $ 25
MrToad2U $10
nilefox3000 $100
DJFOOTS $10
minerva7 $4
HOLLOHEAD $10
Urban57 $50
JROCK3480 $200

Take your piece of this great promo just by playing in our cash games, 10 times the BB is yours if you flop quads no matter what limits your playing!

Stop reading and start flopping!

Floptober Fest Winners!

Posted By : CarbonPoker October 5th, 2007

The winning has began, here the first Floptober Fest winners:

canalto $25
BOILERMAKER154 $25
Berrin $4
8erChamp $4
lordvali $25
Yetti32 $10
lukyhearts $25
bergie2 $50
0minus1 $10

The hand of the day from the winners has to go to 8erChamp. Here is how it played out:

The action was taking place at the 2c/4c table, Feline2770 raised to 16c from early position only to have the small blind, 8erChamp raise to 32c from the small blind. Feline2770 called and we saw a J-A-A flop. 8erChamp slyly checked and Feline2770 raised to 8c, 8erChamp raised to 16c and Feline2770 made the call. The flop was a 2 and 8erChamp turned up the heat betting out a $1, Feline2770 tried to counter moving all-in over the top for a grand total of $3.86. 8erChamp made the easiest call of his life, and the river card wasn’t even needed for the result, 8erChamp flipped up pocket rockets for flopped quad aces, while Feline2770 flipped up pocket jacks for a crushed full house, jacks over aces.

I’m not sure how your supposed to get away from that hand, I’m pretty sure that if I’m Feline2770 I lose all my money there too.

Congrats to all our winners for the day, keep playing those big pocket pairs, remember any flopped quads Queens or higher pay!
